Back in the 90ies...

.... i used to ride my best friends’ 916 SPS on several occasions , as well as other examples from another friend owning the store smile. They were very fast compared to anything else on the road. Back in 2014 or so i took out a 1199 Panigale on the streets. My friend gave me the bike for to days in order to test and investigate some ‘flaws’ it supposedly had according to the customer , there were no flaws. I knew this bike would be totally different and totally faster than any 916/996 of 15 to 20 years before ( i remember my first ride in 1994 on a brandnew 916 SP which set completely new standards at that time) So the Panigale turned out to be amazingly gobsmacking fast, I couldn’t believe how it accelerated that fast. When i returned the bike my friend asked me if i wanted to testride a 996 which had a small issue, this was my chance to relive my crazy ‘youth’ years AND to feel what the difference was with the new stuff. To my amazement the 996 felt really slow ( it wasn’t) compared to the 1199 cc modern high revving twin. How times have changed. On the other hand the feeling you get when you climb on that trusty 916/996 , it really felt like ‘coming home’. As a daily bike the Panigale is undoubtedly the one to take, easy and comfy to ride, but the 916 has loads more character, LOADS MORE. Then back in 2018 my friend gave me a brandnew 1103 cc Panigale V4.

Immediately from the start I realized this was in another league... at any level .... Extremely fast and extremely manageable, the only thing to keep in mind is to look even further than you are used too .... A LOT FURTHER .... you get up to silly speeds like 200-250 kmh on any average backroad without making any effort. It’s totally crazy and becomes dangerous whenevr you get used to it. Sidenote, two days after i took the V4 pic i crashed my BMW 120 diesel into a row of trees ... since then i’ve only ridden around 2-3000 km on a bike. Filip

All the bikes, except for the one at the end ( same as on the second pic) have over 200 hp. The world has gone mad, in normal circumstances i would celebrate this but since there seem to be more speedtraps than common sense in my home country all i can do...

Whicch MV is that ?

I used to ‘hate’ MV because they looked like the 916 but now i know better. Next to Ducati and many others another fabulous Italian brand. Never sell it !

But people are heavier nowadays as well

That evens things out doesn’t it? And driving without license plates is ill-advised; cops see it straight away Better drive with plate nicked from your grumpy neighbor

I got heavier as well.

A sign of getting old i guess, as well as my longing for older stuff 😁. When i was ‘young’ i took off the plate more than once for several weeks, at one point there was a police car behind me and they didn’t even notice it .... or they didn’t bother 😁. Th...

Superb and all the power you realistically need to have fun.

True .... 75 hp should be enough.

My Scrambler 800 had 66 whp and was tuned to an astonishing 72 whp, but the engine got a lot more fluid and easy to control now. The sound with the open ( i threw away the db-killer) ZARD exhaust might be a bit over the top but it’s soo much fun now. It i...

Ducati make some beautiful bikes. I used to own a 916 SPS, insane power, noise. A real beast it was. Lord knows what a Panigale supeleggera is like.

In today’s politically correct climate I wouldn’t bet on loosing 60.000 Euros because I coincidentally took my Alpine up to speeds of over 200 km/h. Loosing my 35K Megane would already be sad enough .... but loosing a 10K Clio or Ducati would be ‘acceptab...
