More Road Snakes, etc.

After Nicolas' article on driving his Alpine on snaking roads, and the big storm that filled my Lotus with water, it was time to get out in the sunshine and dry the car.

First we went to the end of a road we'd never been on before, where we found an open space preserve.

If the area in the distance is called Stoneridge, I think we can safely call the closer area Cactusridge.

We walked out into the wilderness, which we didn't even know existed until today!

West Sycamore Park sign

Whose location is beautiful but I might caution any hikers to beware of snakes and cactus.

We found bees hard at work on the blossoms -- don't they know it's almost October ... yes they do and it's desert here and blooms are just coming on some plants.

It's almost noon but the moon is visible in the clear sky.

We followed a steep fire access road through an open gate with no signs saying Keep Out.

finding ourselves at the bottom of a valley with NO traffic, NO obstacles, and NO No Trespassing signs. Yahoo, a new place to explore.

The road kept switching back and forth between asphalt and cement

I worked up on the ridge to the right, for 10 years, and never knew this road was down at the bottom. It's invisible from the side where I worked.

I didn't make those marks, honest.

An interesting way to display your house number, where the cement driveway meets the asphalt road.

One section was shaded by very old,old pepper trees.

There were palms down here in the valley too.

Finally after about 5 miles we came to the end of the "land that time forgot" and we cruised back into Scripps Ranch, happy and with a dry car.

The trees here are all eucalyptus, imported from Australia about 80-90 years ago. I was told this by an old geezer, whose dad made him walk these hills, planting seedlings every afternoon after school.
