Lotus Evora - any experiences?

Sep 05, 2024,10:00 AM

Having some time at my hands always leads to the what if game. While we do not necessarily need an extra car at the moment thereโ€™s the desire to perhaps experience something new and broadening the perspective. A bit like with watches - few of us need any additional ones yet we still desire them ๐Ÿ˜‰

So the current object of curiosity is the Lotus Evora. One of the USPs is its 2+2 seating, which would allow you t to be used to shuttle kids to school on the odd occasion in addition to attacking the odd mountain pass.

The period reviews were largely positive but would of course also bei interested if there are any owners here, willing to share their first hand experiences.

So should I? ๐Ÿ˜

I have driven but not owned an Evora

I expected more than it delivered. The clutch was quite firm, making the driving experience unfriendly. Later another dealer said that was unusual and must have been the fault of the particular car. I also found the cabin a bit claustrophobic so didnโ€™t pu...

Fair point - there is a dealer in the vicinityโ€ฆ

Should definitely give it a try ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป Was there something apart from the clutch where it didnโ€™t deliver as you expected?

You should, if "feelsome" driving is a priority

My Evora S, from the 1st series, is now in continuous every-day-use since 2010. There were some niggles sorted at the beginning under warranty, but since then it was just an annual service (and one "rebushing" of the suspensions). After 220'000 km it is s...

Excellent review!

Great review and pics!

Reminds me of Harry's Garage white esprit trip! I briefly looked at the Evora 400 when they came out because I was in the market for a RHD sportscar with a manual gearbox but early models had all kinds of issues and they were overpriced in this part of th...

A bit of a long story

 By: Arronax : September 6th, 2024-12:11
Beside manual transmission I had a set of unusual requirements due to parking space limitations, no more than 190cm wide which ruled out some nice cars (z06, r8 v10). 911s were ruled out early because I already owned one, driven many and they have become ...

I as recently offered a Bentley R Type, which would have been fun but didnโ€™t fit the garage ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ And that generation RS4 definitely excites me - but as you say, most are leggy ๐Ÿง Am surprised that there were waiting lists for the Z ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ Thanks again for ...

only in Japan I suppose!

I wish they would have offered another Z convertible, loved the 350Z, the 370 not so much. Even played with a rare 6 speed Giulia QV but as much as I love italian cars and bikes, it just left me cold.

I am surprised by your Giulia commentโ€ฆ

Otherwise it tends to get universally positive reviews ๐Ÿง๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Better than an m2

Doesn't fare so well vs alfas of old, especially the busso.

It was good to hear your experience with this car โ€ฆ

 By: Cpt Scarlet : September 5th, 2024-13:43
I had one for a week and whilst the car had a certain charm the gear change was pretty awful. In my opinion the car just felt as though it needed more development time.

Thanks Captain!

Apart from the gearbox issues would the rest be sorted through time or remained undeveloped to the end? ๐Ÿง๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Yep. More... Lotus.

 By: amanico : September 5th, 2024-16:48

Exactly.

Thanks so much for this thoughtful and detailed response!

 By: KMII : September 5th, 2024-14:36
I guess a test drive will be essential to check out also whether the kids can be put in the back without anyone crying foul. But it certainly sounds promising enough! Thanks again ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

Key for me though ๐Ÿ˜€

Remember it from a GTG many years ago ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

 By: KMII : September 6th, 2024-04:48
Was properly impressed then that such a thing existed for the Evora ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

Chapeau ! Enjoy the ride :)

Certainly a great car - BUT

 By: MCG (Markus) : September 5th, 2024-15:27
I would not take the +2 aspects (kids) into the equationโ€ฆ they get older soon, and these +2 are children seats! Compromise for nothing. However - please - drive a Alpine A110. Anything. If you not have done so! For me the ultimate driving car!

Children growโ€ฆ

 By: KMII : September 5th, 2024-16:19
But in that time an additional car will likely enter the scene. In the meantime the Evora could be a contender ticking that particular box as well ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ So if I understand you correctly youโ€™re saying the Alpine is vastly superior to the Evora? ...

I can not say that, because I did not drive an Evora.

 By: MCG (Markus) : September 5th, 2024-20:40
But I drove Ferraris, Porsches and other high performance cars. Against all them, the driving experience in the Alpine - for me - is 2. to none! I did not buy it because I needed a car with some practicality - e.g. skiing, etc. which is impossible with th...

Surely there must be a ski rack for the Alpine? ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿคž๐Ÿป

 By: KMII : September 6th, 2024-04:46
A classical winter must โ„๏ธ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป Thanks again for your opinion. Letโ€™s see what the coming months bring - if thereโ€™s a second practical car in the garage and the next life stage looking good, an Alpine is certainly a contender ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

If you want a manual the a110 is out

 By: Arronax : September 6th, 2024-11:46
I enjoy rowing my gears way too much to give it up, the a110 maybe when my knee gives up !

One of the better onesโ€ฆ

 By: KMII : September 6th, 2024-12:14
Sadly limited in terms of torque, so no potential for stronger engines ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

+1

The old adage of adding lightness ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

Absolutely right ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

That's it. 3,5 Kilos per HP.

That at least for meโ€ฆ

Would not be a killer criterium ๐Ÿ˜Š

I know ๐Ÿ˜Š

Time to organize some test drives ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

Tried something along these lines?

Maybe shorter skis then? ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜‰

 By: KMII : September 9th, 2024-17:44
I hear your point but this has been a standard attachment type for cars like the 911 in the past as well ๐Ÿ˜Š Oh well, worth a try ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

Right you are ๐Ÿ˜Š

No. No. No.

 By: patrick_y : September 6th, 2024-12:58
Mechanics have told me lotuses are just evil cars that are impossible to work on. Tight areas one cannot get their hands into. Substantial percentage of the car needs to be disassembled to do basic things because the car wasnโ€™t well designed to begin with...

Is that still the case with the current ones?

 By: KMII : September 6th, 2024-18:13
Or a past experience like you need two Jaguars, one for driving, one for spares, which also stopped being correct when Edwardsโ€™s took over?

Can't say for certain, but probably likely.

 By: patrick_y : September 9th, 2024-13:34
Unless you're telling me that Geely is developing everything from a tried and trued Geely platform that is made in large quantities, I'd be worried. But the only way to tell is to speak with someone who is trained to work on current Lotus vehicles.

The sports cars are still on Lotus based platformsโ€ฆ

 By: KMII : September 9th, 2024-14:33
Which doesnโ€™t have to be a bad thing - Lotus has developed these for much larger manufacturers as well, and quite successfully. But of course a current mechanic will know best ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป
