I think what makes a 911 a 911 for most people is having the engine in the back so I guess to those folks a Cayman will never be a 911.... despite the GT3RSR being mid engine..... but whatever. Still though, as far as the model line-up goes, today we have something similar to the 928 / 924 strategy that Porsche abandoned. At the time, the 928 was introduced to replace the 911 as the top of the line more luxurious and more powerful coupe while the 924 was introduced to fill the more entry level and more sporting niche that the 911 was already growing out of. Today we have the same bifurcation in the model line, the second the Boxster was introduced Porsche had room to fatten up the 911 and the Cayman could be Porsche's true sports car that the 911 never really was.
