In many ways yes...

I think the beauty of the 718 Cayman/Boxster is that it's become more of a purist sports car at this point than the 911. It's mid-engined for better handling, 300ish lbs lighter, two inches narrower and 6 inches shorter, and seats only two in a low and sporty configuration. Meanwhile the 911 has a much larger cabin (seating four) and overall (with notable exceptions) has the driving style more of a GT car. So, from the perspective of a sports car carving through a canyon, I'd say yes, the 718 might be the purist car of choice at the moment.
However, the 911 has a legacy and reputation that the 718 will sadly never have. Many will skip right over the 718 given the history behind the 911 (not unlike some watches with a strong history). Porsche is also very careful (with the exception of the 718 GTRS) of always making sure that the more powerful engine finds its way to 911, ensuring it will win in the straight line.
I'm a big fan of both the 718 and 911 (and in fact own a 718), but I do think that if we were to set the 911's reputation aside that the 718 is currently the purer sports car of the two. Again, I do think both are EXCELLENT cars and some of the finest sports cars available to the general public at the moment, so no knock on the iconic 911.
