I am sooooo tempted right now...

My all-time favorite affordable car is currently on BaT...

1971 Intermeccanica Italia Coupe

I don't know what about it makes it one of my favorites--at any price; perhaps it was sitting in one when I was in high school. Only a few hundred made so they don't come up for sale often. It's probably the only affordable vintage car I'd consider as a replacement for my 356.

I know I'm just dreaming here...I'm out of room for another car. But more importantly I'm almost positive if I bought it I wouldn't survive the night--my wife would surely smother me in my sleep.

So coming across one that is for sale must be irresistible ;-)

It really is hard to resist but resist I must if I want to remain happily married! I've only seen one in real life once and that was in the '70s.

At that time, even though I had no money, I tried to convince the owner to sell it, figuring I could beg my dad for a loan. It was being stored in a local mechanic's garage and had been there for a couple years. It needed some work though not much.. I've ...

I remember going to Huntington Beach Chrysler Plymouth in 1971 with Dad . . .

. . . and seeing dozens of eye-poppers. When we came to the lime green Hemi 'Cuda, my eyeballs must've been wide as saucers. Dad noticed my interest, as all good Dads do. When the salesman came up, he said, "What can I do for you, sir?" Dad points his thu...

Definitely not a correct restoration when you check out all the photos but nice enough for a driver, which would be fine with me.

My 356 has risen in value over the years to the point where if it goes up much more I'll be afraid to drive it. And I don't want that!

My 356 has been incredibly reliable for the past 20 years but I believe the Italia would be equally reliable, being fitted with an old-school Ford 351 V8.

As far as affordable, they usually sell for about the same as 356C coupes in similar condition, so it may be expensive for a toy that would rarely be driven, but not unrealistic. I know if I were able to convince my wife to let me buy it she would make me...

That what I said to myself last week

Never heard of and definitely never seen this car... regarding a happy marriage... a loving wife can be very understanding of a man's 'weaknesses'... providing it is for cars and not flesh... BUY IT IF YOU LOVE IT.

go for it
