The gearing issue is all because of the mileage number. The engines are all the same
Sep 26, 2021,14:49 PM
The EPA tests cars on a standard, simulated city and highway (ie lab, not out on actual roads) program. The most critical gear used in the manual transmission ends up being third. As a consequence, it’s is kept longer (compared to the auto) so that the engine runs at a better RPM for the mileage number during the test. By necessity, first and second are also longer. The net effect is that those gears have essentially less torque than their auto counterparts(sometimes as much as 30-40% less), and that’s why manuals are no longer quicker to 60mph. Autos can get away with better gearing because the computer can more precisely manage both gear selection and the throttle-by-wire to optimize mileage testing. That’s why the manual GT3 couldn’t initially get certified in California but the auto could.
Unfortunately, another reason why the manual is fighting an uphill battle for existence. Even when it is offered, it is now the less potent transmission off the line. At some point, that may even force the enthusiast’s hand.
Thanks,
Brian

Holy Trinity with the Cayman GTS
By: sebks : September 25th, 2021-19:48
Dear All, Here are a few pics and quick impressions of my morning drive to Susten / Grimsel / Furka passes aka the “holy trinity” of best mountain roads. I went with a friend who has a Boxster My 911 will be delivered next week (delayed again) so the deal...

The dealer told me ithe engine was “mild” at low RPM. This MT6 is a no go for me, hopefully the pdk is better… but that’s a shame because the manual shifting is really nice…
Difficult gear ratio

I knew it with my car. The problem is the law. Speed limits on roads. Always my car want faster, and the rpm is not ideal. Yes, also a 6MT, but the 5 is good to use from 90kmh to 190kmh. The problem lays at 1, 2, and third gear. When i go Porsche, i will ...
I'm in the northeast so deman motorsports

Sharky and deman both get the gears from guard. Deman has a proprietary 2nd gear ratio I think. Hollinger makes gears but only 3-6 which is great for race cars that can use the long 2nd gear in the track.
Sounds great!

Any Porsche sounds like a great product to me. From Macan/Cayenne to Boxster/Cayman to 911 to Taycan, every one is a great product!
Beautiful photos, what a lovely drive.

In all honesty, for real world/road use the turbo 4-cylinder version of the Boxster is actually a more enjoyable car to drive. I'll admit I own one so I may be biased, but even the 4 cylinder is far more power than you're able to use on the road if you wa...
My friend has a “base” 4 cylinders 270 cv boxster

He was right behind me on the curvier sections, I was a bit ahead on the longer straight, but clearly not by a huge margin. I drove the Cayman GTS 4 cylinders in Germany 3 years ago… can’t recall much difference in pure performance but the sound is not in...
