Hi Mike

Obviously the situation in the US is completely different.
You’re either in an area with towns and villages spread pretty far apart or you in highly densely populated areas and metropolises

If you’ve only got 3 dealers each 40 miles apart, then having an aftermarket distribution network of shops and independents is logical.

To compare, I live in DUBAI, city with approx 2 mln inhabitants (of which 1.4 mln are expats and of the 1.4 approx half is blue collar workers who live in labor camps in the desert)

The whole town north to south is 30-40 miles max. Yet we have 4 Mercedes dealers, 3 Volvo and they are never more than 10 miles from where you are

Different market different concept you’re absolutely right.

Another thing that has a certain impact is the fact that this city makes you lazy. There is a service for everything.
Starbucks can deliver your coffee to your home, into your bedroom if you want to.

Couple mid 40, 2 kids, 1 dog living on the Palm can’t imagine anymore how they managed in Europe where they had no maid, no nanny, no driver, no gardener and god forbid what to do without your dog trainer.

They complain DUBAI is an expensive city to live in. Reality is most folks live well above their income.

But that’s Dubai. Back to cars.

When I was young, every guy from high school was working on their little scooters, playing with carburetors and what have you to make the thing go 90 km/hr where designed for 40
Once they got their own car they joined clubs where they could tune their engines in the evenings

I tried, but failed miserably at it. I’m no mechanic never will be. Once installed a stereo system in my car. Showed the car to my father in law who’s only response was: “which idiot did this (me) haha

So I always envied those who could do those engine works.

Ps say high to captain / uncle from major/friend

Jurry

Yet we have

We make money by making customers do what they hate most, which is going back to dealers

" It's always a bit provocative when I say this, but there is something not very ethical about the car industry as a whole. We have traditionally made money on servicing cars, not selling them. So, we make money on making customers do what they hate most,...

There are cars with not much emotion like Toyota. It are mostly not the cars, your neighbour think you won the jackpot. It are cars that always open the hood with a cable which do not break. If the cable break, and your Toyota is old, than even a Toyota d...

Not sure I agree

I’m not so sure if I agree on the statement made. 30 years back, yes I would have fully agreed. Authorised dealers were bloody expensive, body shops and “all brand repair” shops were unreliable at best. But since then a lot has changed: - reliability is w...

The quote was from a guy who worked for GM, Ford & Volvo and he was talking mostly about the US and northern Europe

 By: cazalea : August 14th, 2019-09:02
The manufacturers are stuck with authorized dealers in the US due to protectionist legislation in almost all 50 states. Tesla is the only one bucking the system today, trying to sell direct and service at your home, work or in a factory service center. Th...

I got my maid/nanny/gardener/nurse to help me change the oil

 By: cazalea : August 14th, 2019-12:00
Actually she just posed as if she were doing it herself. I have this nifty marine oil extractor - you pump the handle once or twice like bicycle pump; that creates a suction, and it pulls all the oil out the dipstick tube. You don't even get dirty hands. ...
