Capricious is right!

I wonder if this COVID situation is making me throw all logic away a la buying lots of toilet paper?

Haven't stocked up on the toilet paper yet - but maybe this could
help my craving to get the AM.

All logic aside, the AM would make me very happy - but I worry about all of the little imperfections that may come with ownership. Maybe like owning a delicate independent!

Cheers
Peter

Ok need a bit of advice: 2018 Porsche Targa 4 GTS or 2017 Aston Martin DB11

Hi all, Looking for some sage advice from fellow purists. Given the "lockdown" I\'m feeling a little bit of cabin fever, and am considering to get a nice, Low mileage sports car for the weekend. Two cars I have in mind - and would love to get some feedbac...

Aston Martin all the way for me.

I don't own one, but my brother in law does. After the two years you plan to keep it passes you could then try the Porsche

Wow that was clear!

My heart is going for AM and my head is going for Porsche. I kinda think of the decision between a Patek / AP (Porsche) vs getting an independent. Cheers, Peter

The Porsche

For its reliability, handling and retained value Cazalea

Both amazing and stunning cars .

My personal pref would be the AM

Many thanks

Totally agree with your observations on why the Porsche is better. I'm wondering if fully German bred and born Porsches act differently in DE vs when they export to US? This would also be a factor. Cheers Peter

Yikes another for Am: 2-1

There are emotions that are stirred here but I am worried of course of the emotions when dealing with repairs on the AM Thanks for the feedback! Peter

It depends on what you want to use it for...

 By: KMII : March 16th, 2020-08:26
If it's car 3 or 4... in the household, many of the arguments for the Porsche and against the Aston potentially take on a lower importance. If you absolutely need to use it (say car 2) then the Porsche might be the more reliable bet. On a more personal no...

Thanks for the clarity

Great point on V12s. Not something you still see and especially with turbochargers. It would indeed be a third car - but one I am considering to do a bit of touring in Europe for fun. That being the case - do you have any thoughts on Long distance drives?...

In spite of everything...

 By: KMII : March 16th, 2020-08:58
It's a relatively modern car - so you shouldn't worry unduly. If you are fine to spend several hours in the seats, the rest should be fine. The Porsche would probably achieve marginally higher cornering speeds but then again, when touring you would probab...

True...

It seems a lot of Mercedes Benz systems have been utilized - giving me some comfort for sure about improving reliability. Thankfully the car shouldn’t see anything more exotic than a drive on the autobahn on a Sunday If you have thoughts on the Roadside A...

If it’s primarily Germany...

ADAC will easily have you covered - it’s not like the times of having to get two (one for driving, one for spares) are still with us 😉

Interesting!

 By: pfang56 : March 17th, 2020-13:30
At least for now when we are quarantined in country it looks like ADAC would be the option for the foreseeable future... Many thanks for the insight, Peter

Normally I would go for the Aston but

 By: sham1 : March 16th, 2020-09:13
because you said you would be selling the car in two years time, then, it has to be the Porsche. i have had had two Astons and three Porsches and the former depreciates beyond comprehension even if bought used. Owners of DB4, DB5 and DB6s and all Zagatos,...

Depreciation is a factor...

 By: pfang56 : March 16th, 2020-11:30
But I’ve generally accepted that buying most cars at this price range requires a bit of an iron stomach to accept the substantial depreciation. But maybe this a little bit of a mid life crisis too - more often the joy of driving a car can be more exhilara...

In that case buy the Aston

 By: sham1 : March 16th, 2020-17:28
The Porsche will be a better driver's car but the Aston will bring a smile to your face even before you step into it!

Porsche for me

I own a 2018 Targa 4 GTS; great all season car and value for money in terms of resale. ...

Beautiful car!

 By: pfang56 : March 16th, 2020-11:30
Haven’t seen that color here In Germany. All points definitely valid Cheers, Peter

Thanks my friend

It’s a PTS Arena red; special order similar to 996 turbo from the 90s

Ha that colour!

 By: VinnieD : March 17th, 2020-07:26
It was one of the best "release colour" you could imagine on the wonderful Turbo... but it was the 993 if I may add

You’re right; my mistake 😐

 By: Stylophile : March 17th, 2020-16:57
Yes it was 993 Turbo. thanks

Ha ha ha

So similar to the watch world. Amazing how some exclusive handmade timepieces weighing less than 200g exceed the value of exclusive handmade automobiles weighing more than 2000kgs. Emotion seems to play a factor for sure! A slight edge so far with the AM....

I'd take the porsche

 By: Fla25 : March 17th, 2020-07:20
I'd take it and use it on its full potential, open road and maybe also tracks. I love AM too but I see it more as an exit sports car... cheers F

Weekend full potential...

 By: pfang56 : March 17th, 2020-13:22
I think as a daily driver I would probably not hesitate and get the Porsche - and my sense is it would be excellent consistently on tracks, on roads, and on streets. Appreciate the vote - now slightly more balanced. Cheers Peter

I would vouch for the Porsche

 By: VinnieD : March 17th, 2020-07:27
just because I am a reasonable person you could pick a fun colour though, like Miami blue

Reasonable is definitely a consideration...

 By: pfang56 : March 17th, 2020-13:24
If I learned the AM is absolutely not reliable even on weekends then Porsche is a winner. While I think the blue is insane it’s a bit more aggressive here in DE Many thanks, Peter

Oh come on… is this even a question?

 By: Boron : March 17th, 2020-12:44
You’re wanting a weekend toy not a generic daily driver – one has a V12, the other… who cares? When you’ve bought the Porsche, hand in your man card on the way out.

Ha

This is one of my favorite responses Many thanks for the passionate response - choosing the AM is definitely a much more bold approach and certainly not one that is seen so often in Germany. Peter
