Back in 1997 they certainly did !
I remember riding in this 916 SPS, after 300 km we changed the standard aluminium wheels to magnesium ones .... the best bike ever suddenly became better ... by a whole lot.
Actually here we mounted them onto our 955 racer, never got to see them burning but hey, you can’t have it all 😆.
