that looks worse than my Volvo hood release cable

Jul 15, 2020,10:53 AM

On my newer Lotus I have 47,000 miles and the cambelt interval is 60,000 -- I am taking a chance by not changing it yet but I like to live dangerously, and my car is driven pretty easy and maintained.
In theory the belt can be changed without taking the whole front end off the car ...

The Volvo was a pain, more than 5 hours labor with my helper and me to replace a $35 bicycle gear shift cable that unlatches the hood.
I know it's for securty reasons, but really Volvo, how many engines are stolen out from under the hood?

In the end I gave the car away to charity 5 years later...

A customer stop by last week

 By: Jocke - Bad Santa : July 12th, 2020-06:30
and ask me to look at his XC70 he bought a month ago. It just stops, can you see what is wrong with it. So I take a look and send him this pic. Now his is not so happy longer because the seller told him the belt was changed not long time ago. ...

It looks like the belt is old

 By: Jocke - Bad Santa : July 12th, 2020-07:27
so at the moment my customer discuss it with the seller. The repair cost is maybe 75% of the cars value so I guess it goes to the junk yard.

belt versus chain

 By: Weems@8 : July 12th, 2020-07:54
My car have a chain, so i have no worries. Honda. Know, Mercedes use also chains.

I like belts

 By: Jocke - Bad Santa : July 12th, 2020-07:57
they make sure I can buy another watch, chains not make me rich. šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

I know what you mean, Jocke.

You know this, but i want to share a belt story i had with my Volkswagen Bora. The car was a good car. Changing a belt was highly expensive. For european wps friends i tell a price in euro i had to pay for a belt change. Why it was so expensive- ā‚¬850,ā€” ea...

bmw use chains too

 By: Passionata_george : July 12th, 2020-08:17
ask some N47 owners what they thinkšŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ But u ve right in perfect world a chain is forever

I know

 By: Jocke - Bad Santa : July 12th, 2020-09:27
so long people don't do longlife service and change oil at 15000km will there be no problems. If they change at 30000km the chain will break.

Factory recommendations

 By: Weems@8 : July 12th, 2020-11:59
Hey Jocke, great technical car info you share! I am a dream for the car makers i think. I bring my car each 15000km for servicing. Why not 20.000km? Thats because i use my car, and sometimes i think it is a sports car and have fun hitting the throttle. An...

You may not know the secret behind the LL service

 By: Passionata_george : July 12th, 2020-12:17
there s no oil which good for 30k ,even the manufacturers know that however the carbon footprint includes the emission, etc and the service too , longer service interval less penalty for the car manufacturers that s the reason they ve introduced the LongLi...

LL

 By: Weems@8 : July 12th, 2020-13:06
I know LL from Volkswagen. Never understood why you should drive so long without bringing the car for service. Everything which get good service works longer and better. For example a watch which see a great watch service center on time, stay accurate. Sa...

BMW 1 series from the beginning

 By: Weems@8 : July 12th, 2020-11:52
I saw a video of a BMW 1 serie with a chain problem. Many strange noises came out from the engine bay. The engine is in-line build in do rwd, the chain is at the fire board side. If BMW tackle the problem with the current model, i do not know. You say the...

N47 is the engine code for 2.0L diesel , there was so many broken chains that BMW replaced those during a recall

 By: Passionata_george : July 12th, 2020-12:08
but the 3.0L diesel had the same problem , as Jocke said LL service for these recently released TBs is death sentence...

To some people the belt change (and the multi-belt or whatever that one is called and the water pump and the rollers) cost so much money

 By: xyz123abc : July 12th, 2020-09:32
that they wait - and wait even a little longer - and then it is too late. I got a Ford Mondeo for my wife from a friend with a replacement engine - for close to nothing. The previous owner had neglected the change interval - his loss, my gain. ...

Smart

 By: Weems@8 : July 12th, 2020-12:09
Smart purchase. Always good to know about car technics. Even a Ford is a good and great car as the service recommendations followed up. For example my aunt drove a 16 year old Renault Twingo which was as new, because an owner handles with care.

Maintenance schedule

 By: Jurry : July 12th, 2020-10:58
If a car is serviced as per the maintenance schedule and intervals etc. then neither belt nor chain should break. Itā€™s usually the result of poor or no maintenance

Maintenance is mostly ignored by many people

So when we all go drive Audi

 By: Weems@8 : July 12th, 2020-12:18
You can buy more beautiful watches. When an Audi driver complain about high service costs, an answer could be, - never heard of Mercedes Benz? Mercedes, is not cheap, we know, but in my opinion far better then the cars from Ingolstad.

I have never change a hood cable at a Volvo

 By: Jocke - Bad Santa : July 15th, 2020-10:57
so I will nat say it is a common problem.

That looks expensive. I am glad my Jeep uses a timing chain as well.

Car manufacturers use belts, and other car manufacturers use chains. Jocke told us why many chose belts. Chains are when the service is correctly followed by the schedule, bullet proof. The people who are against chains say, chains make noise, so it is no...

As I just got a belt job done on my alfa multiair, including water pump and tensioner. Yes it's more expensive than a chain and I did it at 8yrs/50k km but I track my car and this little thing brings me so much joy that on a smile per mile ratio it's comp...
