I really should buy the new Alfa Giulia instead of another me-too sedan. Not that the Giulia is as beautiful as other Alfas of yore, but it still has the logo ;-)

It's finally time to get rid of my 26 year old daily driver for something...older.

 By: Emil Wojcik : February 28th, 2020-08:05
After what seems like a lifetime of happy ownership, I'm finally giving up my trusty 1994 Mercedes E420. Since my wife's Jeep is always at the end of our driveway, I rarely use either of my daily drivers--the Mercedes and Jag. I've been basically retired ...

These old car become like family members.

Can’t get rid of family. Lol. Have great drive over the weekend. i have a 50 year old in the drive. Lol.

I agree! I was struggling with the idea of selling it to a stranger!

And when my wife got her Jeep we gave her Explorer to the same son, so now he has one of my old cars and one of his mother's.

Beautiful story and cars [nt]

That E420 is a solid car...

I've always liked the Mercedes vehicles from that era. Good solid cars. The 420 engine is also quite powerful.

Great car

I am a big fan of this series, especially the 500 or 500 limited ( no comment about the seats 😁).

If it were a 500 I might not have given it to my son. LOL

And I like the seats, even though they're rather firm, they've always been very comfortable even on long journeys.

This could be a brave and interesting adventure....

Into Jaguar ownership. Good luck !

LOL. I agree and thanks. Although so far it's been just as dependable as the Mercedes, I'm very familiar with the 'occasional' disadvantages of vintage British car ownership.

I've had my MGB since 1985 and it's had its fair share of moments of unpredictability or worse. That's why I originally wanted to hold on to the Mercedes, knowing it's been probably the most dependable car I've ever owned. ...

It certainly looks good ...

The MGB “Speedster”... Now that’s an idea 🤔

By 1994 the W124 chassis was mature and well-refined

No wonder we get so much from them. A few years back I sold my 1995 E300D to a lucky 17 year-old whose father apparently knew the value of these cars and no doubt encouraged him. I'm sure that boy was stylin' in High School with that big black Merc comple...

I envie you for your collection.

That Jag reminds ms of the drives in my uncle’s XJ back in the eighties .... Here in Belgium our (leftist) politicians have gone completely mad, in several cities old cars are prohibited unless you pay extra money .... more than 1000€ per year extra. A lo...

Thank you. I've wanted an XJ since the owner of the ad agency I worked for in '84 had one. That's why I couldn't pass this one up. I've always loved the style of the Series 3.

I've been concerned for years about what direction the laws in the US will take regarding old cars. In fact, when I wanted to put my MGB back on the road in 2008 after many years in storage, I assumed it would no longer pass the New Jersey emissions inspe...

I've been debating what to do with my E430

 By: r0gue : February 28th, 2020-12:56
The "Panzer" is currently tucked away for the winter, as it has been every winter since 1998. I bought my E430 from the original owner two years ago. This car just purrs on the highway at 90 MPH.. . errr, umm, I mean 55 MPH. I asked my daughter if she tho...

I drove a very similar Jag for several years

 By: JohnFM : February 28th, 2020-14:13
It was my mom's originally. She bought it for its beauty and I was determined to not like it -- slow off the line, not quick around corners with all that sheet metal. Something just didn't seem right with the handling and driving characteristics of this c...

Slow off the line is an understatement. And the understeer is so pronounced that it seems like you have to start turning 20 yards before you get to a corner, although the wheel does turn effortlessly...

But what a comfortable ride!!! 'Living room on wheels' is an accurate description. I've thought the series 3 XJs were the most beautiful 'modern' sedans ever made since they were introduced, which is why I had to own this.

The more I gaze upon that Jaguar...

 By: r0gue : February 29th, 2020-03:39
The more I consider it an aesthetically perfect sedan. Gorgeous! Of course, the Merc is a little more "mechanically" perfect than the Jag. But, we ARE on Purist, are we not? Well Done!

Yes, I also believe the aesthetics are perfect for a sedan. Even though I haven't had a single issue with the Jag yet, I agree the Mercedes is mechanically more trustworthy...at least in my head so far.

When I was still living home, what seems a lifetime ago, my parents would question certain things I was attracted to--high-end watches as the perfect example when quartz were 'so much more accurate'. And I remember telling them, 'it's all about style befo...

Agreed! Buy the Alfa!

Of course even though I don't want to intentional own a car that may turn out to unreliable, I don't drive these cars often enough for it be a major problem. We still have my wife's Jeep for practical daily use.

You know you're truly retired when . . .

Good move to give the MB to your son

Now the car stays in the family and your son knows that the car has been taken care of. You will get a good daily driving by your Jag.

Thanks, it feels good to keep it in the family and he's spent most of his free time this week staying late after work detailing it (he works at an Acura dealership as a technician).

 By: Emil Wojcik : March 4th, 2020-08:19
Here's one of his friends at work helping detail the interior. You'd think when you spend all day working on cars you'd want to take a break but that's obviously not the case when you really enjoy cars. ...
