Maybe the reverse gear position is different on the 4 and 5 speed transmission?

If it is, ask him to look up for the knobs pics with for both transmissions. The reverse on his car will match one of those knobs and from the knobs he should be able to tell whether it's 4 or 5?

If it doesn't drive he should still be able to make out the pattern from feel,

which will tell him which transmission. If he says at least 6 positions I suspect he is slotting back into the same gear.

As far as I remember, Lotus installed the 5-speed (from Austin) only in the late model years, series 130...

is O/D. Stands for over-drive. It’s a mechanism to enable cruising at highway speeds. Quite common on cars of this era. (mechanics)
