Back in the shop again for the elco. Engine is toast.

It is hard to build an engine that is high compression and high performance and drive it on pump gas which in the us is 91 octane. Race gas is too expensive as a daily driver. The damage is done by detonation which as you can see is painful. Detonation oc...

This is timely..

Hi Bill, I'm looking at picking up a used 2017 acura that has the same compression ratio and lists 91 octane only as recommended. I was thinking of putting 87 in it and from what I've read online that shouldn't really be an issue. Not sure if you had any ...

My understanding is 10:1 static cr should be about the limit with aluminum heads . . .

. . . unless the cam specs and ignition are specifically tweaked for 10.5:1. And even then it's sensible to build in some headroom. Gas stations are beginning to carry E85. Have you thought of configuring the El Camino to burn the good stuff? You can run ...

And i have the msd 6AL Specs Ross custom pistons ...

Fairly wide duration, which should relieve some compression . . .

. . . but isn't lobe separation narrow for the street? And that's an awful lot of valve lift even for a high-revving Chevy. How do the bores look? Does the block need machine work for the new pistons, or will they drop in?

Bores look good. Will be moving to solid roller lifters vs hydraulic rollers.

Solids are lighter Below are the hydraulic roller lifters. ...

Ps this is a 406. [nt]

The OG stroker from 1970 . . .

. . . with an 0.030" overbore! Way back when, engine builders went with 400 blocks fitted with steel 350 cranks using special bearings to account for journal differences. These days, they're using 400 cranks in 350 blocks and turning the journals down. Bo...

you are correct this is the thin wall 400 block.

One more think we found and may explain the detonation. The fuel pump push rod ate the cam. Check it out. This could have cause the lack of fuel under load and the reason it was running lean. My cam what a good cam looks like ...

Cylinders are fine they will be honed as there is no damage.

The car has been waiting 4 months to get a turn in the shop so no where near a full year of running. It has be run hard only a couple runs on the track.

That does not look good!

Hopefully you will find a sustainable solution.

Higher octane gas or lower compression.

 By: Bill : September 17th, 2020-12:44
We don’t have higher than 91 at the pump and we want to go fast. No compromise. Lol

Um surprised is so low.

 By: ChristianDK : September 17th, 2020-12:47
Here, the std is 95 and you can also get 98. Although not at the prices you pay in the US.

A tax I suppose. Would that be similar to pricing in France?

 By: ChristianDK : September 17th, 2020-12:58
In Denmark it’s very similar to France. I will not even get in to out tax on cars, which is among the highest in the world.

Wow! That's some destructive damage!

I almost thought that parts of the valve had hit the pistons but when I see the valves they're all intact. Really sad to see all that carnage in there. I feel for you Bill!
