at that time when built (1989-1991) it was more expensive than the Porsche 964 (the regular coupe version 2wd/awd)

BMW Z1: A relatively affordable legend?

 By: amanico : August 6th, 2020-08:01
A bit more than 8000 cars were made from 1988 till 1991. A superb body, original doors, a good old 2, 5 6 Cylinders delivering 170 HP for a weight of 1250 Kilos, it was not the most living on the road nor the most powerful, but what a charm! I turned arou...

Never seen this model before. Maybe they never made it to the U. K.

That black one looks superb. Regards Kev.

There were definitely RHDs as I remember seeing one outside a local pizzeria!

Z8 (my favourite of the Z models) was only made in LHD though and for me sits along side the Z1 as the epitome of BMW cool.

This is lovely, when BMWs were “drivers“ cars.

Has anyone here driven both a 370 Z and a Boxter or a Cayman?

 By: myles721 : August 6th, 2020-08:15
I have the 370 (no ego here) can someone comment on the differences as I know the performance numbers are almost dead even.

I drove a 350z a while back, totally different from a boxster/cayman

 By: Fastwong : August 6th, 2020-09:08
Best to go drive one because the cars are so different it's kinda apples and oranges. Throw the numbers out the window. Mid-engine vs front engine, German vs Japanese engineering and design ethos, different target customers, etc.

I owned the 350 also

 By: myles721 : August 6th, 2020-09:35
That’s why I asked about the 370 they are completely different cars… The 350 is a sporty car and the 370 is a sports car they aren’t even remotely similar...370’s handling is much better.

I owned and loved the 350z....

Sold it with over 100k km, which i did myself. Great time it was.

Don't believe these made their way to the US, either . . .

 By: Dr No : August 6th, 2020-09:09
. . . as I've never seen one here. Another German car that never made it here officially was the second-generation Audi A3. I've seen two, though . . . they must've been brought in from Canada. Art

That one's a true legend!

driving is fun on winding roads because

 By: penfriend : August 6th, 2020-10:29
on the autobahn you will normally need to close the doors due to wind speed and then it is just another convertible; top speed is ok as well, handling is good in curves when people see the car without knowing of it they are unable to guess its age due to ...

Definitely under appreciated!

 By: Fastwong : August 6th, 2020-10:02
That was a sweet spot in time for BMW cars and the Z1 was about as fun and characterful as the Germans ever got.

Yes! HP aside the Z1 pioneered a short lived design language that matured in the 8 series and then vanished

 By: Fastwong : August 6th, 2020-12:43
My old 8 series - similar nose treatment to the Z1 with the slick wedge shape and tiny grills and you can see the same flare lines around the front and rear fenders/quarter panels. Like the z1 it also missed a bit on hp, they both looked faster than they ...

A very different but very cool car

I remember at the time Emmanuel Petit (future world champion with France 1998) was diving one in Monaco when he was a player there. I recommend you check on youtube the "Vintage Mechanics" on BMW Z1 that was screened recently in France. Very interesting c...

Into engine oil

 By: Weems@8 : August 7th, 2020-12:00
When oil runs through your body, best Nicolas, it never goes away. The Z1 is in my opinion a typical car for BMW fans. Old timers from BMW are strong. I never drove a Z1, but it is an interesting car. The prices i do not know. I look sometimes the prices ...
