A and B you're right, C series collectors like to make a distinction between AP at 6 and AP at 12, the latter being less desirable. Out of those C series with AP at 6 with a real "C series" dial... well there's very very few of them. Other than that out of sheer numbers, D series are the rarest I believe.
To be noted, yellow gold A series don't exist, they started mid B series and are mostly all C series (there's no letter on them but the period of the pieces matches the letter).
White gold were mostly C series with very early ones late B series.
Cheers !
M.

What's your favourite 5402 series ?

A super clean 5402 I used to own - it came with box and papers, matching numbered link in the bracelet, "AP" link, stepped link for the bracelet to case links, original clasp and bracelet... It was too perfect, which is why I sold it - it wasn't getting e...

This โ€œisโ€ the original sports watch, no matter which series.

A near perfect expression of a wristwatch.

Well...

I may get in trouble for saying this but I find the Royal Oak to be much more of a work of art than a wrist watch. I like looking at it more on someone else or propped up by its bracelet than on my own wrist.

Beautiful ! [nt]

So is it 2000 a series and 1000 each b and c? Also read somewhere 1000 watches without alphabetical character too before the series watches but not sure if that is true?

Yes but there's more to it haha

I believe there was an early white gold royal oak done for shah of Iran - one of first. But not sure about the 1000 initial run before a series Iโ€™ve read somewhere (believe on Hodinkee)

Yes it was ordered by him, not sure when it was delivered/produced though

Thx sir

You know if that 1000 watches before a series myth? I would have thought a100 was hundredth royal oak but Hodinkee mentions some 1000 first without alphabetical series

My pleasure !

I'm sure there were a few but not 1000s that's for sure, very very few in my opinion.

There are two small variations within their guilloche dials with some having 34 lill squares while some have 30 IIRC- I wud have to check my notes on that one. To me the tighter pattern

...luks finer, more detailed and appealing to the eyes. But it doesn't really take away anything from the original A series dials.
