I picture you a watch brand CEO gathering market intelligence for your future models. I would consider myself a typical watch consumer. My work is in a different industry, so I won't know a hairspring from an escapement, although they do add to the mystery and glamour to me. I fully admit that I am influenced by others' tastes and advertising, but I also feel that the heart, my heart, wants what it wants!
To be honest, in the first 30 years of my watch-collecting, I have actually avoided these 3 that I ended up with, because I found them to be choices that were too obvious. I initially gravitated towards less-mainstream choices as the Blancpain Villeret and gradually added Piaget and Girard-Perregaux along with the PP and VC to the collection.
At the time, I preferred dress watches. As time wore on, I found myself wearing the auto bracelet watches more and more, due to convenience. I don't have to wind them or worry about the croc/alligator straps touching water, and they were more durable. I ultimately decided to stay with auto bracelet dressy sport watches that are monochromatic, to go with anything I'm wearing. Also, I wanted standard men's size watches, which to me meant 40-41mm.
Although the Patek Philippe Calatrava, Vacheron Constantin Patrimony, Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch, Panerai Luminor, Blancpain Villeret, and many others that I have owned through the years are very beautiful, very well-made watches with rich histories, they were ultimately ruled out based on my latest criteria. It also helps to reduce my watch collection for my other passions--car and fine art collecting!
