A life outside the Royal Oak: Audemars Piguet Jules Audemars Metropolis.

May 07, 2020,10:14 AM

Of course, the Royal Oak is a strong model in the Audemars Piguet collection, but, in my opinion, not at the point to make us forget some marvels, in the vintage world, or in the modern universe.

There are some AP which I hold in very high consideration, such as the Millenary Starwheel in steel, some Minute Repeaters, Perpetual Calendars, or... This Jules Audemars Metropolis.

Why? Simple! I love the combination of a perpetual calendar and a world time, and I find that the Metropolis is an exquisite watch, with its superb dial and nice case.

Here it is, in platinum. Credit picture: Antiquorum.

What about your AP outside the Royal Oak?

Best,

Nicolas

A truly stunning watch, thanks for the post!

My only current AP is this cal 2225 Millenary, chosen because of it's simplicity, readability, and the fact that it bears no resemblance to the RO. Not to disparage the RO, a truly wonderful classic design in its own right, I just wanted something less ub...

The AP Metropolis is a great piece

Rare, and underrated IMO. Perpetual calendar with a world time feature, and in an interesting aesthetic...a traditional look, but some flair as well. Great value if it can be found. I saw one recently that was quickly snatched up. Cheers, John

I'm totally on board with you Nicolas!!!

This Metropolis is to die for. I love it, especially the "exploding" numerals. Thanks for the reminder of this wonderful AP. M4

A terrific piece, and a good reminder!

I've never quite taken to the RO, in any of its incarnations, but I've always been partial to the design of the Jules Audemars Chronographs from a few years back, with their beautiful enamel-looking lacquered dials. Not so much to the modular movements th...

Jules Audemars Chronometer with Robin Escapement!

The sound this escapement makes is incredible! ...

The concave gear wheels on the back are amazing...

I wonder how they polish those concave gear wheels on the back.

And a picture from the front.

No message body

Big congrats! Enjoy.

The robin escapement in this watch isn't self starting, so shake the watch very gently like a disc on a horizontal plane if the watch doesn't start after winding.

Exquisite piece! [nt]

Much better photo!

If you put the watch on a soft cloth on the nightstand, you can hear the ticking sound. It's very loud!

Amazing One [nt]

So many options!

My personal preference would be the Schaeffer Star Wheel with minute repeater from around 1995 (photo courtesy of Christie's - from their May 2019 sale in Hong Kong) ...

I’ve often considered this one

It’s so bold. And in platinum, which I love. And the complications are favorites. But is it too bold for me? That’s always the question.

I had a chance at a QP25657 in platinum (rare watch) a few years back for a very good price

I stupidly passed on it because I struggled over the size. (36mm but wears small). It was a mistake not going for it.

I always admired ...

...the AP round watches on a leather strap from the 1980’s. I don’t have a picture but I think the series was 2558*. They had a simple round gold case, white dial, and subdials for the day and date. There was also a moonphase version. I think the case siz...
