I think much of the hoo-hah has to do with the marketing and build-up

AP really positioned CODE11-59 as a ground-breaking new collection, the next iconic design, took two years to work out how to affix the logo to the dial etc., etc., etc. I was expecting the Next Big Thing and something as revolutionary as the 2001 U.N. FREAK, for example. Instead, what we got was a middle-of-the-road very conservative offering (that's aimed mainly at the dials) that left a lot of folks scratching their heads wondering what all the big fuss was about. It's a classic "over promise and under deliver".

I think Steve Hallock put it nicely in his SIHH 2019 Summary Podcast when he said "AP tried very hard to tell you they were not playing it safe, when in fact they played it safe". I think it's this sense of disingenuousness that sparked a certain amount of the negativity. At least this is my take.
