Is AP almost all about Royal Oak? ...

 By: W72 : June 26th, 2020-05:52
Just look through the recent posts in this AP forum, one gets the feeling that it is (>90%) about Royal Oak. The AP brand image is so strongly linked to this. I often wonder - Is this good for AP and is that what they intended/wanted? can they get people ...

The Starwheel is a forum favorite.

Even if AP went 100% Royal Oak (which won't happen), I would still love the brand. I've never suffered angst over the predominance of the Royal Oak in AP's lineup. M4

Just that I feel AP has so much to offer..

back in the early 70s and 80s AP is among the top brand and with many offerings... but now it is principally known (which I agree is incorrect for those who knows the brand deeply) to be ROs.

Sadly, yes...

...but I'll throw in the John Schaeffer line as further proof of what they could do. Hodinkee ...

Oh yes..

John Schaeffer is a splendid example of what AP can be... I love this series... and wish I had the means then... Thanks for showing them here.

Comparing AP to VC and Breguet, it's pretty clear that AP has taken a different direction in terms of "brand DNA"

 By: LK : June 26th, 2020-07:57
VC and Breguet integrate their DNA into a diverse range of designs, whereas AP seem to think DNA=one or two designs. You could specify any watch shape and complications and imagine what a Breguet design fulfilling that brief would look like. Much harder f...

thanks for your input..

and I too find the somewhat "challenging". Maybe I am too old school and these new design concepts are like that..

I prefer the Starwheel to the RO...

Yes, but AP will find their way soon

The Re-Master 01 is a step in the right direction. The price might be high, but most people find the design appealing, so the chunkiness is actually charming. Even if the Royal Oak and Royal Oak Offshore continue to account for 85% of sales, it is importa...

I don't find the chunkiness charming in the least...

...by using an auto movement (not faithful at all to the original) it ballooned to 14.6mm thick. It's a shame because the two-tone case and dial are quite beautiful.

It is indeed a real shame that AP is so Royal Oak centric but it is the sign of the times where the market calls for more sports watches than anything else...

I am a BIG fan of the Starwheel which was a game changer in it's day. If we think about this display, it went on to inspire the likes of Harry Winston with their Opus (precursor to Urwerk), Urwerk itself, Moser's interpretation last year, Gorilla watches,...

To be fair, AP has explored many, many successful complications of the RO and diversified into RO OS.

The RO has become more diverse than Rolex' oyster case and no one seems to make this criticism of Rolex (and it would be silly of they did).

This Starwheel is a masterpiece imho.

There are plenty of great and amazing APs out there that aren’t ROs .

Indeed, there are many fabulous APs..

I used to have a rectangular AP with regulator dial in manual wind. But I gifted it to someone more than 18 years ago. It was a small watch, by today's standard, but I remember it wore well on my wrist. I did not have any photo of my watch but found one s...

A very nice looking AP .

Love that dial layout a lot .

You had to be brave before you could have success

Let’s not forget ap basically invented the sports watch that saved mechanical watches - and frankly loads of other innovations along the way. Even now with code they try to mix it up. While I agreed loads of great not ro options ...I still think inside th...
