I believe that's conflating two different policies...

The only Lange models that require a prior purchase are (1) the steel Odysseus Datomatic and (2) numbered limited edition pieces (and perhaps certain very complicated pieces).
All other Lange models (Lange 1's, Saxonias, Datographs, 1815 Chronos, Zeitwerks, etc.) require no prior purchase. However, Lange will no longer sell their more complicated standard-production pieces (such as Datographs, Zeitwerks, etc.) to ADs for those ADs to stock in their store inventories. Rather, the AD can order these pieces (Dato, 1815 Chrono, Zeitwerk, etc.) one at a time, only when they have a customer who says they want one. The AD then sends the customer's name to Lange, Lange double-checks to make sure another dealer hasn't already submitted that same customer's name (to reduce price-shopping/discounting), and Lange then sends the watch to the AD for sale to that customer. Lange will send the watch immediately if it's already in the company's inventory, and the customer may have to wait several months if Lange needs to manufacture their watch for them. Lange doesn't care if the customer has ever bought another Lange before, Lange doesn't care what other watches or brands the customer owns, and the customer is under no obligation to purchase a sight-unseen watch if it arrives and the customer decides they don't like it. So this isn't an "application" process in the usual, more restricted sense (and in the way that getting a steel Odysseus Datomatic or a limited edition Lange would be).
This is my current understanding of the process as Lange (in the US) explained it to me.

isn't the new Lange strategy to only offer these 'complicated' pieces to established Lange boutique customers, after an 'application' process? Anyway, I digress. They are beautiful, especially the 1815. Simple bicompax dial with the same 3D mini-city of a...
Indeed.

Prefer it without as well. I heard they are discontinuing the rose gold Dato.
I agree

the 1815 is very nice. I believe you can get the chronos from ALS boutiques without an additional purchase (may need to put a deposit down and wait for a while), but they will not discount chronos. I do own a some Langes and was wearing one when I went in...

My personal preference is the 1815 Chrono.

Due to what I perceive to be a more attractive dial, as well as the slimmer case. Having said that, taste is a very subjective matter, and the Datograph is an icon worth getting.
