Lange 1 vs Panoreserve

Aug 07, 2020,00:31 AM

Can someone point me to a detailed comparison of these two watches and their movement finishing in particular? Before I pull the trigger on either one, I would like a better idea of how much of the cost difference results from higher level of finishing on the Lange (hand v machine, anglage, striping, engraving) instead of the use of PM vs steel, marketing cost etc.

As a picture (or two) say more than a thousand words:

Panoreserve

Lange 1

Buy the Lange.

Yes, the obvious money-no-object answer is to buy the Lange. At the same time I feel the GO presents significant value for money. But I am not looking for buying advice

either way, but rather a technical comparison between the two. So if someone can help - this is the place to share links to reviews etc. Cheers

IMHO Lange is better finish, in addition

Lange has clear perfect design language, character and harmony VS GO which sometimes confusing as if it is a mixed of different characters and aesthetics

Rather than being a place to share links, this is a place to provide our own opinions and personal reviews

No better reviewer than the man who puts his own money down on the product and lives with it for years. Pays for its service - fights to get his watch back in better shape than he sent it in, etc. I can't help with a comparison though, as I have no Lange....

Thanks for this - that’s not a good look for GO. Then again, I have read about QC issues at Lange as well, so unless this would be a recurring issue with the Panoreserve, it would

not deter me from buying into GO - but I can fully understand this would be your final purchase with them.

I agree...

No competition.

Lange 1

I have no experience of the Panoreserve, so I can't really compare. But I find the Lange 1 absolutely mesmerizing both from the dialside and the movementside. I am sure you will not regret that choise, if that is what you end up with. ...

If money is not an issue, Lange 1 hands down.

 By: pongster : August 7th, 2020-01:35
Well, even with money as an issue, still the Lange 1. Since if money is a non-issue, would get both.

Lange 1 without a doubt

I'm not aware of direct comparisons out there because it isn't very comparable. It is known ALS would have much better finishing. And one thing for sure ALS will also hold its value better (assuming you're not paying a premium to obtain yours).

Well that’s the thing I would be interested in understanding in more detail. What exactly is different and better in terms of finishing on the Lange? It’s a pretty basic question

 By: ChetBaker : August 7th, 2020-04:19
and I was hoping someone somewhere posted side-by-side shots of the movements explaining the differences in lay-man’s terms.

Lange is ahead and generally has an unmistakably more beautiful finish

Lange und Söhne combines several finishing techniques which are often done by hand (in this case the Panoreserve too) But, in the town of Glashütte the rule is excellency first, any watch produced in Glashütte is a representative of the Glashütte’s spirit...

The front side is important, too. Because from the front side you can tell one is iconic, the other isn't... Yet.

As for the comparative backsides, I would say that the Lange has more golden chatons, is slightly better finished, but, if you exclude the different metals, it doesn't justify such a difference of price.

Thanks Nicolas - this is exactly the part I’m struggling with. Of course the Lange is better finished, but looking at some side by sides and videos it is not night and day.

I would say this particular cal. 65 is much closer to Lange than a similarly priced offering from JLC, BP, and even something like a Moser. The question is, is is it worth the extra 15k simply to know you have the best finishing possible? And it would the...

Long ago I saw some incredible macros of the GO. Under the that scrutiny, it was undeniable. The Lange all-day-long.

I should clarify

 By: r0gue : August 7th, 2020-08:03
I think the GO is still amazing. You are the only one that can decide on the value. But I assure you from what I saw there's a difference.

I can't offer a side by side comparison

As I don't own a GO. However, as a Lange owner, I have absolutely no regrets. The level of finish on the movement is truly superb. Would purchase again in a hearbeat

I used to look at them side-by-side frequently...

From about 2000-2006, I worked very near an AD who sold both Lange and GO. I frequently looked at the two brands side by side. I never owned a GO but briefly considered getting a PanoRetroGraph. I always preferred Lange because GO, while very nice by itse...

I think it's pretty obvious that most people are going to choose the Lange over the GO

 By: jleno : August 7th, 2020-19:28
It would be more interesting to consider the choice of the lange 1 vs. the GO + another watch that makes up the difference in price, which is enormous between the two. Regarding finishing, the Lange 1 is better, but not by an enormous margin in my view. B...

Thanks for this thoughtful response - this is also how I see it. Given that I don’t really care about precious metal, I am leaning more towards the GO as the “value-buy”.

Out of curiosity - what are the watches in Lange 1 territory (20-30k) that you consider to have better finishing?

To clarify, my main criticism of the Lange 1 movement finishing is that although the quality is good, there's not a lot of it and movement is not well exposed

 By: jleno : August 8th, 2020-11:50
The amount of hand engraving is relatively small, and a lot of it is hidden by the swan neck regulator. The 3/4 plate reduces the amount of anglage required, and there are no interior angles. The 3/4 plate is covering almost everything up and you can't ge...

Hi, Chetbaker. Understand your concern on whether lange worths that extra cost comparing with GO.

I didn't own a GO, and only had one lange, the Zeitwerk. In my opinion, watch collection is a luxury hobby and not an essential item, hence I would suggest you go with the best one that you can afford, instead of the compromised alternative. At the end of...
