Why?
Because Lange took a lot of care by doing it. The date display was proportionnaly enlarged to create again the perfect triangle with the counters.
The power reserve indicator is almost invisible because our eyes are always attracted by the white components of the triangle.
On a practical point of view, the data are easier to read.
And last good point: due to its higher diameter/thickness ratio, it looks much slender
Don' forget the 41mm is not a THAT big diameter. It mainly depends on your wrist. The black dial and the bezel make it a bit smaller.
So the conclusion is:
for me there is no good or bad Datograph. Both are great and the evolution is successful.
I can understand from a pure collecting point of view the interest of the first one. It is a point to consider.
So put them on your wrist and choose the one you like the most. Trust your own assessment.

I saw the new gray-dial Dato Perp in NYC last week...
