Advise needed for a preowned purchase

May 31, 2023,21:26 PM

Hi everyone,
I am considering purchasing a preowned Lange datograph or datograph perpetual. But I don’t have any experience with Lange watches. Could you share some insights with me as to:
1. What are the most important things I need to look at when I examine a preowned Lange Datograph?

2. I am considering the platinum versions. Do I need to worry about the possibility of overpolishing? I learnt from somewhere that polishing platinum doesn’t lose any metal. But will polishing change the shape dramatically?

3. The warranties of the watches I am interested in were already expired. Should I or can I take it to the boutique for a second look after the purchase?

I really appreciate your advice.

Pete

Moderator Edit:  Pptraveltime, I've decided to lock this thread because nobody here can help you guarantee a transaction or make a transaction less risky for you when you don't follow the most important rule.  From what I gathered in your vague post, and subsequent responses, you don't follow the primary rule - buy the seller - which basically means buy from someone you trust!  If you have the need to immediately go to Patek Philippe Service in New York City to show them your watch and verify that it's not stolen, then that means you can't trust your seller has thoroughly inspected this watch and studied its background.  Thus, considering you didn't do what WatchProSite considers the most important and primary homework, I think this line of questioning is premature.  We also don't want our members to be put in a tough spot where they give you their advice and then something negative happens, those members would feel bad and post less in the future.  The questions are also extremely vague.  Thank you again for your post.  Good luck!

I would test all functions and put on a timer.

I had the same watch once. The date changed to 32 and it had to go in for warranty service. 11mos waiting I had the dealer trade it out for something else.

Good advice, I suggested something similar...

I presume our member would time the watch and so on if he could - although I probably shouldn't make that presumption. But some problems don't become apparent after years - especially if the perpetual calendar's February 28/29 leap year system works or no...

Very good tip. I didn’t know 32 will happen.

Anything can happen!

Can't think inside a box. You've got to think outside of the box.

Common sense is the most important thing... And your post is missing some important details...

Pptraveltime, please read your own post. Then consider this is an Internet forum that doesn't know who you are and doesn't have the pertinent details. And almost all of these are a matter of personal opinion. Especially question #3. If you're in the finan...

Thank you for taking the time to write the long post. You are right. Will take more time to research on the polishing issue. As to the point no3, I didn’t make myself clear. I used to take the preowned Patek watches to Patek NY service center for double c...

A service center is not the same as a boutique... And you're not buying the seller, you're gambling...

Again, it ultimately depends on your relationship with the boutique. The boutique is there to serve clients whom are supporting the boutique. Not to serve clients whom are circumventing the boutique on buying the watches but coming in to get their watches...
