I really wanna get an ALS, but...

 By: psychotic : January 14th, 2014-15:39
Hi everyone, I've always liked German design, from my Bimmer to the timepieces (I came oh so very close to buying a Glashutte PanoInverse in white gold...) The Lange Moonphase and the Saxonia Annual Calendar have really caught my eye and they are definite...

Depends upon your tolerance for scratches, though white gold...

... is harder than red gold. Also, note that unlike many other watch brands, Lange's WG alloy is not rhodium-plated. That being said, your gold watch, whether Lange or any other brand, will develop noticeable though light scratches if you wear it every da...

My pet peeves

 By: psychotic : January 14th, 2014-17:59
Yes, I know that many watch lovers cherish their timepieces with all the dings and scratches much like they do with a well-worn pair of jeans or a finely aged wine. And I totally respect that. However, I tend to use the analogy of a scratched car. If some...

One precious metal that might suit your needs is...

... honey gold! Hardness is its major feature. However, your choices are limited to the three watches in the "Homage to F.A. Lange" series (1815 Moonphase, Tourbillon, and Tourbograph).

Well said, CR!

As always, your long and deep knowledge and experience with the brand is priceless! Ken

Photos explain why I don't wear my A.Lange & Sohne watches

 By: MTF : January 14th, 2014-20:31
.....daily ! ;) The ALS babies are brought out in carefully controlled situations....... Still, they have scratches that make you go: "Aarrggghhhhh". I have to agree with you, wear steel watches or maybe gold ones with minimal bezel surface area to scratc...

Piaget watches

 By: psychotic : January 14th, 2014-23:08
That Piaget ultra-thin Polo is nice (and fragile) but it takes a certain type of guy to be able to wear a diamond crusted watch. Perhaps an air-traffic controller. Planes can see you and your watch from miles away!

Non-Piaget watches too

 By: MTF : January 15th, 2014-02:40
This man is NOT an air traffic controller and that is not a Piaget watch. He also has Panerai....... Regards, MTF ...

Nice Cartier

Sorry for my lame joke. I was referring to this Piaget: Also, I've also got a few diamonds on one of my watches as well. Not as impressive as the one above though. ...

Actually, the 900P is not fragile

 By: MTF : January 15th, 2014-15:55
We can talk about this after SIHH 2014. The new 900P movement was designed not to be fragile as it is integrated into the watch case and there are other design features that protect the function under external duress. The whole watch can withstand hundred...

The bezel is a scratch magnet, yes, but the good news is that Lange knows how to perfectly

Polish your Watch. It will come back like new! Best, Nicolas

Yet we should not forget that each polishing takes away material ...

 By: Marcus Hanke : January 15th, 2014-00:32
... and especially if the case features some sharp outlines, a considerable amount of material has to be taken away to faithfully reporduce these outlines. Sometimes, dings and nicks need the filling with a laser. Generally, I think that whoever is really...

PP vs. Lange

 By: psychotic : January 14th, 2014-23:25
If PP is the Rolls Royce, then Lange is the Ferrari. The view of the caseback of a PP is all about refined subtlety while the Lange's caseback screams in look-at-me details. I was sure that the elegant Lange Moonphase model in red gold or the Saxonia Annu...

A cigar in one hand, a chardonnay in the other

Cars and watches

 By: psychotic : January 15th, 2014-18:02
If you crack my head open, all you'll find are calibres, balance wheels and car engines inside. Sorry, I tend to think in what I can identify with.

Not a big deal

 By: le_chef : January 15th, 2014-05:51
I have two Lange, one in pt and one in wg. They both get worn when I feel like it - and that's mostly with jeans and t-shirt going to work, or going grocery shopping, or whatever. If they get a few scratches who cares? Frankly the amount of metal you lose...

Good response. [nt]

It's all about how careful you are...

 By: patrick_y : January 15th, 2014-10:24
I wear many a scratch magnet watch. And yet they all don't have scratches. Just have to be careful and no stupid fast movements. Suggestion, wear something different on those Friday Happy Hour evenings.

Sensible advice [nt]
