Lange 1 vs 1815

Dec 26, 2017,04:40 AM

the Lange 1 design is the icon or face of modern Lange.. nothing else looks like it - the double date window, non-overlapping asymmetric indications which somehow managed to remain incredibly balanced..

However I have friends who don’t like the Lange 1 aesthetics (the main complaint being the asymmetric layout ie precisely the design that makes the Lange 1 so outstanding)

I have a 1815 (time only) and Lange 1.. I like them both for vastly different reasons :
1815 : classical pocket watch feel with traditional Arabic numerals and railway minute scale
Lange 1 : modern design with an asymmetric but balanced layout coupled with its iconic date windows

If this is going to be your only Lange, I suggest you give yourself more time to make the decision.. at first I preferred then classical 1815, but now the Lange 1 wows me everytime I look at it..

1815 up-down vs. L1 moonphase

 By: Chromatic Fugue : December 23rd, 2017-18:02
Hi all -- almost a year ago I reported that I had placed an order for the new Lange 1 moonphase (WG black dial), which would not be available for many months, but was smitten by the 1815 up-down that was actually in the case. The uniform recommendation of...

Good question and here are my 2 Singapore cents :)

the iconic Lange is always the Lange 1 but for me, I will prefer the classic Lange 1 over the Lange 1 mp. Mainly because the mp has lumed hands which I prefer not to have in a classic. The Lange 1 mp is always a more modern looking watch . So my direction...

I’m going with your prognosticated universal response

Get the 1815 UD if that is the one that raises the passions. Personally, I’m not convinced with the L1 Moonphase black dial, but I haven’t seen it in person. It should have had a black date disc and I’m not sure I can get over that design decision. But ot...

I just got the WG L1MP.

I honestly think it's the best-looking Lange ever. So you know what I would suggest. But let me add: never, but never, say "this will be my only Lange".

True lol

when i bought my first Lange, the Saxonia thin 37mm i said this will be my one and only lange! 3 months later i added the L1 in white gold and now looking to add my third, just waiting to see what comes out of SIHH!

I have to agree........

The Lange 1 MP to my eye possibly may be the nicest looking Lange made. I have had the platinum version for 9 years now and could never see myself selling it. I think the new WG version is stunning as well, and while the up/down is sharp it's not the Lang...

Looks wise

I would definitely prefer the 1815 up and down but that is mainly because I am not too keen on the date being shown on the watch, precisely what the Lange 1 is famous for. Saying that, I used to own a 1815 up and down for a month and discovered it took ov...

I prefer the aesthetics of the L1 MP, in any metal.

It also seems to be less readily available compared to the 1815 up/down so that would be my choice if were up to me. That said, get the one that your heart tells you to because you won't be able to forget what tugs at your heartstrings. It's your opinion ...

If I were you, I would go for the Lange 1 MP without any hesitation. It is so “Lange”, desirable with its day/night indicator (perfect contrast between the black dial and the blue of the MP), timeless, both casual and dressy... BUT, I’m not you!

You tried them both and it seems obvious you prefer the 1815 Auf & AB, so go for it. Life is made of regrets. Don’t add one 😉 Best wishes Alkiro

thanks for the thoughts ...

Appreciate everyone's insights. I will persist a while longer in my indecision ... and perhaps post a couple of photos after a return visit to the AD.

I had a similar dilemma!

when i first saw the new L1 MP in white gold/black dial, i was smitten by it but then the more i looked at it the more i lost interest and didn't like the day/night disc as i thought i would- i love the stars and i want them visible at all time. I then we...

My only advice is: listen to your heart.

So you prefer the 1815 u&d? That's fine, it is a great watch too! In that case, I would have chosen the L1. But YOUR point of view is the most important one! And you can't be wrong with any of these watches. Fx

So ... here's the choice, in photographic terms.

Pictured are (1) the L1 MP, (2) my current favorite watch, straight from my wrist, a FPJ Chronometre Souverain, and (3) the 1815 up-down. I just can't get over the legibility issues with the L1 MP, and it's also a bit thick for my wrist. Must say, I am ta...

Without a doubt the 1815 Up/Down

Have you considered the L1 MP in rose gold? I think that one is pretty great and was my close second right after the classical L1 in white gold. But if you’re limiting yourself between these two, then the 1815 up/down for sure!
