Kerning is interesting.

From what I’ve read there is actually a lot of work that goes in to getting kerning correct enough to be visually appealing. Different fonts have varied weights ( thickness of lines) within the letters. Depending on which letters are next to each other and the font size, you may have to spread them out.
Also, slightly related to kerning, some fonts have letters that are not actually the same height, so that they will appear to be the same height. I can’t remember specifically which fonts, but some Os and Is do this.
It’s super interesting if you like getting lost in the details of the details of the details.
