My only thought when I first saw that was that I wonder why Lange isn't electing to include their newer style moonphase on all of their watches now? I suspect it adds just a touch of thickness, but how amazing would it be on this model!

Worth to add; many folks still prefer the "vintageish" feeling of this old moonphase. I've asked about this as well and they said it belongs to Lange 1.

It is useful when setting the calendar functions. When the watch stops for a while, you'll know which part of the day are you in. Is it extremely necessary, no. Useful nonetheless.
