Old vs. New ZW -- Dial Side

 By: diracpoint : October 26th, 2022-18:42
What do you guys think about the enlarged sub seconds dial on the new one? It seems to me that there is quite a bit of negative space in the new sub seconds dial ... maybe the white dial color is accentuating it more. Also, the sub seconds dial doesn't qu...

I like the red in the power-reserve, and the darker grey on the central bridge on the new one.

When I see them side by side I agree with your opinion on the larger small (should that be "the not so small anymore?😉) seconds. So lets say the score is 1-1.

Darker grey ...

on the time bridge is definitely nice. Gives it more contrast!

Yeah ...

the sub seconds dial proportion is a bit off.

Aesthetically, I prefer the original

The proportions look and feel better (and better-balanced; I agree with what you noted). It seems Lange has a tendency to take steps back in the looks department whenever technical advances are made. Three quickly come to mind: The latest is this Zeitwerk...

Agree!

I think the dial redesign was not necessary for ZW or dato. Perhaps they felt they have to change something on the dial simply because they are updating it. On the bright side, however, it keeps gen 1 models special!

Interesting!

Which aspect of the new case you don't like? The additional pusher, or the general dimensions? For me, I do like the old case design without the pusher. Yes, it is easier to change the hour on the new one, but the old one has that pure minimalist appearan...

Old one is better balanced

the new face looks to me like a swollen nose. ...

Ha ha

It's hard to unsee the big nose now!

Yeah ...

their gen 1 designs (ZW, dato etc.) are so perfect, it's very difficult to "improve" on them!

Do not mess up something original and classic

If you can relate the kidney grill vs beaver teeth on BMW new design language, you will know what I mean. Agree, too much negative space on the second dial. But I do not mind the dark grey area.

Indeed ...

beaver teeth is an abomination! 😉

I like the ...

red on the PR and the dark grey time bridge as well, but not the outsized sub seconds!

In terms of proportions....

 By: Rhyzen : October 27th, 2022-15:58
.... I very much prefer the original sub-seconds. The side-by-side photo comparison reinforces this preference.

** Also, if you look at the length of the subseconds hand ...

... in the old one it fills up the subseconds dial perfectly, with the "tail" part touching the inner circle. In the new one, there is a clear gap, which gives the impression of the dial being too big ... ...

Eagle eye. Well done!

To be honest ...

my watch buddy spotted it and pointed out to me! 😜

Ha! ;)

 By: amanico : October 27th, 2022-19:51

Hmm... From these photos, I prefer the original's proportions...

That sub seconds dial on the new one does look a little big. Hmm...

The larger subseconds dial doesn't bother me too much...

If I had never seen the Mark 1 dial, then I wouldn't care. It's the red accent on the power reserve that really bothers me. These red accents don't belong on PT case/rhodium dial watches. They detract from the otherwise harmonious aesthetic. Why would I w...

Yeah, in isolation ...

gen 2 design is fine, but since gen 1 exists, a comparison is inevitable! 😊 And, comparing both, gen 2 design looks a bit "bloated" to my eyes. I started noticing it after looking at some live pics of the new Pt version posted by other members on various ...

Comparing them side by side

I think the new case is rather unbalanced.. The 1st gens seconds subdial and power reserve indicator seem more harmonious. but the increase in power reserve and reduced case thickness are welcomed
