Traded away a watch I loved for one I’ve been wanting for a very long time.

Over the past couple of years my interests have moved away from sports watches and more towards high-end dress pieces that I can dress down to amazing casual pieces.

This focus toward high end was first fueled by the purchase of a Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF chrono. That watch really piqued my interest in high horology.

As I started to drift from sports watches towards more elegant dress pieces, I decided to trade the PF for a Brequet Tradition 7097. Playing around with casual straps on that watch got me really intrigued by the possibilities of “dress” watches that can be made casual and that were strap monsters.

Then I stumbled across an amazing opportunity to trade my UN Freak X (plus some$) towards one of my all time dream watches, the PP 5170g. To say that I’ve been enamored by that watch is a gross understatement. It is the classiest hunk of beautiful mechanical engineering I’ve ever strapped to my wrist. I absolutely love it. By far, my all time favorite.

Between the 5170g and the 7097, my other watches have been neglected. Over my holiday vacation I chose to wear my BP FF Hodinkee MilSpec for the week while on our trip. This is a watch that has been one of my favorites in the collection. However, that week on the wrist I only longed to put on the 5170g or 7097. So I came to the decision I would part ways with the FF and get something new.

That brings me to this mornings delivery. My obsession with manual wound chronographs has been taking focus of late and I’ve been wanting an 1815 chronograph. I was finally able to try one of those on recently, and while I was blown away by it, I realized my 5170g is my true love with chronos. So when I decided to look for a replacement of the FF I figured I’d get a beautiful time only piece. The 1815 up/down immediately popped to mind. I have long lusted after the ALS 1815 Up/Down. It is a watch I find to be striking in pictures, but have never seen in person. As you all may know, good secondhand examples don’t often show up, and getting new from ALS requires too much ass kissing for my liking. Fortunately for me, Lady Luck decided to step in. One of the resellers I trust got a LNIB 1815 up/down just a few days ago. We made a deal for trade on the FF and this magnificent piece showed up this morning. Of course I immediately swapped the strap for a more casual Delugs sailcloth, and will continue trying new straps out. I don’t have one bit of regret on this trade. Thanks for reading along and say hi to my new (to me) 1815 Up/Down!

I'll tell you what NN: I think you have benefitted from the ongoing refinement of Lange's movements...

Your gear train appears to have micro-bevelling of each of the teeth. Mine (a 119xxx movement number example), does not. Very happy for you - enjoy it!

Mine is from 2018.

Lange refine their movements slowly but steadily. The base Richard Lange has evolved through its production time. So too has the 1815 Chronograph which now adopts the Datograph’s escape wheel bridge and two other key functional refinements. Before your ph...

Congratulations!

The 1815 up/down is phenomenal....I don't own one yet, I have a L1 MP, Saxonia Copper Bue and a WG Odysseus, but the Up/Down remains on my list...I have seen many pictures with different straps and it looks awesome dressed up or down!

Thanks for sharing your voyage and reasoning

through these exquisite timepieces. After extensively searching for the perfect sports watch, thinking, comparing one with the other, I am also slowly coming to the same conclusion as you that I am more interested in dressier watches and they easily becom...

I regret selling my 5212a. It’s such a strap monster.

I scored one from my AD in 2022 but that was when I was obsessed with other pieces, so I stupidly sold it after a few months. Now that I’m on the path I’m on with watches, I really regret that move. I actually look at every 5212a listed secondhand with re...

I can definitely understand you

because after seeing your post I also developed a healthy obsession with the 5170g 001 , such a cool piece. Love the orange strap that you put it on, would you mind sharing where is it from?

Look at those blued hour/minute hands…they appear uniquely shaped in your picture👌🏽👌🏽

Definitely appreciate your sharing your evolution in preferences. I’m really impressed by how you definitively take action when you know what you like, and you get the deal done. Most of all, I can relate to this move away from the sports watch craze, whi...

Very nice description of your watch journey…

And you seem to be one of the few ones going strongly against the currently prevalent trend 👏🏻👍🏻 As for strap inspiration, in the past Arie did quite some risqué strap combos with his ALSs here (his pictures) 😊 ...

They are all three so different and wonderful in their own way...

....but if I could only keep one, it would probably be the 5170. It's a grey suede strap from Wristbuddys on my Breguet ...

That strap looks amazing.

And I completely agree, the 5170g would be the one I’d keep out of my entire collection.

Nice leveraging of the 1815 Up/Down's versatility.

The 1815 Up/Down's popularity has really risen in recent years. It seemed much less popular back in the Gen1 days. I think owners are more comfortable now experimenting with different straps like you're doing, which opens up a whole new world of possibili...
