Need help with a vintage Tank

May 22, 2019,15:59 PM

Hello everyone,

I am new to the forum. I have a question regarding a Cartier Tank. I am puzzled by the face, hands and numbers on the back. I was told it is from the 1960's, but it feels older than that, although I do not really know. Any help would be greatly appreciated. It is, of couse, a mechanical movement and the size is ca. 22mm X 30mm

Thank you in advance!

it is a beautiful Cartier. the best would be to ask Cartier - they'll be able to precisely point you to the birth of this watch. Best, mahesh.,

Thank you

Yes, I think I might have to bring it to Paris on my next trip. Unfortunately, not all Cartier boutiques have the level of expertise required to help with vintage pieces...

I find it hard

A Tank Louis Cartier with Breguet style hands, is rare, really rare. Only very early ones came with these hands. This in contrary to the Tank Normale that was delivered with this kind of hands more often. It looks like a watch from around 1920, but I doub...

Thank you, Geo!

Thank you very much for your feedback, Geo. The way the numbers are stamped on the back of the case also make me think of an early model, but judging by the condition of the face and the hands, I find it difficult to believe it could be. The Piguet Calibe...

Folding buckle should be non adjustable

If it is adjustable, the folding buckle is new.

Thank you, Geo.

The folding buckle is non adjustable, but it is from the 60s-70s. As you know, the original ones from the 30's had a hand stamped number. I think it is possible this watch had a gold bracelet or another kind of a folding buckle that had to be replaced at ...

if someone would go to all the trouble of trying to fake a 1920's Tank, why would they advertise it as coming from the 1960's! If they faked the enamelled dial, the Breguet hands, the case back, etc. they might as well try to sell the watch as "1920's", n...

Cartier Tradition Department

 By: mikephuvie : May 26th, 2019-08:50
I think Cartier has a restoration department called "Tradition". Perhaps the watch was sent there for restoration and the new dial was created with the matching hands based on their record. Perhaps the movement was not able to be restored and a new moveme...

Thank you!

Yes, I know about the Cartier Tradition department in Geneva. They actually have a new Director, as I heard Mr. Berger has recently retired, but to be honest I had not thought about the possibility that the watch could have been a restored piece. It would...

Thank you for the picture of the Tank Normale. Interestingly enough, the seller only described the watch as being a 1960's tank. When I saw the numbers on the back, I thought they definitely did not look from the 1960's (aside from face and hands that cou...

The watch from the pictures is from around 1937. The hand stamped numbers on the back of my watch are actually a lower number...;-) Those numbers on the picture correspond to the case number, the mechanism number, and the numbers in between (which look al...

My wife’s vintage rank has these numbers hand stamped on the case back. The deployant buckle is in pink/yellow gold, hand stamped number 22859. Movement signed Cartier and was made by Audenars Piguet. Note that dial does not have SWISS or Paris. ...
