In the Shadow of the Pan Am Clippers...

Last weekend I was in NYC to attend the WatchTime event, which was fantastic.  On the way home, I built in some extra time at LaGuardia, so that I could visit the Marine Air Terminal -- the terminal used for the Pan Am Clipper flying boats starting in 1940.  I'm so glad I had the chance to finally see this in person.  The architecture of the terminal is decidedly Art Deco, as are the various appointments that mirror the Pan Am logo.  The mural that spans the circumference of the terminal is called "Flight", and also dates to 1940.  Despite the modern aspects of the terminal that are associated with its current use, the general vibe still summons the ghosts of the past -- for a brief time, I was transported back to the day when air travel aboard the Pan Am Clippers was a glamorous event.  I heartily encourage anyone with an interest in this period to visit, if you get a chance.

And, now, some more photos...

Lastly, when I looked up and saw the pattern in the skylight, I knew that I had worn the perfect watch for this visit...  ;-)

Cheers,
Jim

Hawaii was reached by PanAm Clippers - in the Thirties and Forties before we lived there 60 years ago. I was amazed to read no more than 25 were built, including Sikorsky, Martin and Boeing versions. Cazalea ...

Reyn Spooner did such a nice job amalgamating several of the old Clipper travel posters into its "Trans Pacific 40's" shirt. I love this shirt, and, truth, be told, have several of these. ;-) While we're at it, Tori Richard also pays homage to that era, a...

I always enjoy the Pan Am memorabilia shots you do with your Master GMT. You must have quite the collection! Incidentally, I still have a smaller version of that bag as a memento of traveling on Pan Am as a boy in the 60's. ;-)

You’re most welcome!

It’s great that you are able to use the Marine Air Terminal so frequently — such a nice reminder of the Golden Age of air travel.
