Mark Knopfler at 70....

Aug 12, 2019,12:32 PM

Mark Knopfler, the lead singer and front man with Dire Straits turned 70 today. He was born in Glasgow as his  father was a Hungarian architect who had fled his country in 1939.

Mark discovered music as a child due to his uncle's piano playing, this sparked his passion for music and his parents gave him his first guitar.

While he was a student, Knopfler worked first as a reporter and farm hand and later as an English teacher, until he founded Dire Straits with his younger brother David in 1977.

The name Dire Straits came from the bands financial situation in the early days as record companies showed no interest. Their 1978 debut album, Dire Straits, was an international success, establishing the band's trademark sound marked by the frontman's unique fingerpicking and a laconic singing style unmistakably influenced by Bob Dylan.

Motor cars have been a big part of Marks life and racing his beautiful 1955 Maserati 300S has always been great sight mainly on circuits in the UK and Europe.

Happy Birthday Mark !

Thank you, Casey! This masterpiece will be on the jukebox . . .

Love over Gold and Alchemy remain on my favourite Dire Straits albums. Too bad I missed him performing live....

..... and he seems to be a vintage watchman too....
