Rethinking my thoughts on AP
Nov 03, 2019,18:53 PM
My wife and I have own/owned numerous APs from Millenary, Lady Oak, 15400, Novelty and APROC. ROLEX aside they are the most prevalent brand in our combined collection. Despite this I remain a big naysayer in the Code11.59 despite the big push from within my regularly frequented boutiques.
This weekend I visited the Boutique again and viewed the numerous models of the same watch and others within the collection and it got me to thinking that as an Avantgarde manufacturer they really have no equals. ROLEX is good at what they do, they don’t take risk and make some fantastic watches but they are famous conservative. PP and VC are high end complication watchmakers with arguably 1 Avantgarde off piste offering each which breaks their mould. AP on the other hand truly are worthy of being truly Avantgarde, from Conservative Jules Audemars, to cross over dress/sports Royal Oaks. From very sporty Offshore to wild Novelties and modern concepts or from ground breaking shapes of millenary and Code1159 all of which are topped by stunning haute joailleire can anyone name another brand that even come close?

Ironically, the very range and depth you point to as AP's strength contrasts with the way detractors of the brand focus on a perceived limitation in the brand's great reliance on mainly the RO and ROO lines. To your question of what brands have great rang...

I would still have them in my collection if not for accuracy and reliability issues.
Haha.

Not sure I will ever be an owner but fair is fair, they could have went down the road of most of not all other manufacturers with a standard round 3 part case offering and called it a day. To big - yes, to thick - yes, disappointing - yes but you can’t ac...
