Price Themselves Out of The Market??

To me it's getting to the point where the "average" working guy can't get what I'll call for this exercise, a somewhat higher end watch.  A simple time only watch from the likes of Rolex, JLC, Breitling and TAG, just to name a few have starting prices in the neighborhood of $6,000, some less and some more.  Get into the Pateks, VC, Chopard and similar watches the prices really skyrocket, well beyond what the "average"guy can get. I really want a stainless steel time only, maybe a date also JLC, what holds me back is that they start at the $6,000 I mentioned.  I guess I'm talking from both sides of my mouth as I have 2 Rolex (3 with the wife's), Omega, Bell and Ross, a TAG and various vintage pieces, all were bought before I had 3 boys, or when they were very young, 1 on his own, 1 in medical school and 1 at a state university so that is my priority now, not watches.  I guess what I am trying to say is that the prices continue to go up every year, or more often, and it's hard comprehend just what you are getting for your hard earned $6,000.  Is the watch really worth that much money or is the consumer being misled somewhat?  As collectors and watch lovers we can understand just what is on the inside, but the guy off the street most likely has no idea.  He will go the the local mall or big box store and get a watch for $100 and be quite happy.  I could too, I just would not be happy, so for now I have to do without the JLC, or win the lottery.  A Patex, I really have no desire to own one but I certainly understand the attraction to them, I'll stick with what I have and be grateful for all of them.  If you read this and think it makes no sense, I won't disagree with you. I'm just thinking that the higher end watch makers may be pricing themselves out of the market, for some of us anyway.

That’s going to put certain watches out of reach for some. I’m sure the companies and the people with deep pockets don’t mind. Part of the allure of owning a luxury watch is that not everybody can have one. I’m sure the guy wearing a Patek 5711 doesn’t wa...

Why is anything priced the way it is? Brand perception, marketing, cachet, status, materials, craftmanship, history, exclusivity, availability, and any other number of factors go into pricing. There is no set price or fair price for anything. It is what w...

Iam waiting for my Tudor watches ) A’s now it seems I can’t afford many brands....

As has been pointed out several times above there are quite a few brands that make very good watches for less than the 6K you write of.

And they run the gamut from traditional styling to a bit more avant garde. But if you really want that JLC you could consider selling one or two of your present pieces to fund the new one. Just don't forget to look at what's available at $2500; $3500; $45...
