That´s an interesting point which can bring many thoughts and points of views. I have been involved in collecting different objects along more than 40 years...

... and my personal feel is that there are no rules (thanks God!) regarding how to collect but there is a difference between a collection and a simple accumulation of objects of the same type no matter the quantity or quality of objects gathered.
That is, you may have 100 ties in your closet but you surely are not a collector but you just a man who likes ties so much and have gathered a lot of them.
But... if you have only 50 ties, vintage, modern, from different countries, of different fabrics, you read everything you can find in magazines, books, internet, participate in forums or groups about ties and study and know everything about the history of ties, then I feel you are a collector of ties.
This brings me the basics around a collection: the collection has a connecting line or theme which tells something about the collection and about its owner.
The collection can be of only one brand or several brands, or be about one type of complication, or different brands but similar case metal, whatever the imagination of the collector dictates.
Most often, a collection is built around a Theme: e.g.: "Diving watches", "Pilot´s watches" "Chronographs", etc. or for example "Tool watches of XXbrand", etc..
Then there is the passion and the wish of learning and knowledge of the true collector about the object of his desire. That´s what makes the difference between a collector and accumulator who buys watches randomly just following his taste and taking pleasure of wearing them only without any other interest in knowing about the history of his favorite brand, about technique or any other matter about his watches.
Probably it is a matter of the passion and involvement of a person with the object what differences a collector from an accumulator and thus the difference between a collection and accumulation is more related to the
owner´s relation with the object than to a matter of quantity, quality, brands, types, etc.
Just a personal point of view of course.
Best cordial regards, Abel
