Back in the early '80s, I was visiting the Bay Area . . .

. . . when a local rock station, KSFX, held a celebration of the Stones on Easter weekend aptly titled Roll Away the Stone with the Rolling Stones.
The celebration was a broadcast of every officially released Stones track in alphabetical order. As they were midway thru the first day, a contest was announced: how many songs would be played altogether? First caller to guess within ten would win a complete set of Stones LPs.
I knew the number because, as any besotted fan might, I'd counted them before. There were at least 275, and maybe a few I didn't know of. So right off the top of my head, I thought, "The answer's gotta be right around 285."
Unbelievably, my call was taken by the station. I was third or fourth in line.
The DJ says, "Ok, buddy - what's your guess?"
At literally the last moment, I raised my estimate from 285 to 315.
"Sorry, man. You're close, but not close enough. Sucks to be you." (Actually, he didn't utter that last line, but that's pretty much what he meant.)
:-(
The answer was revealed on the next call when someone guessed correctly. I don't remember what number he (or she) said, but the correct total was 275.
:-( :-(
I was dumbfounded. How could I screw up so royally?
I turned the radio off.
Next day, I turned the radio back on to listen to the last few songs. One of the DJs said, "We just had a caller who claims we've played over 300 songs. We double-checked . . . the total number is going to be 313."
