Like you, I believe the RW Smith is the end game, the pinnacle in watchmaking. I had deliberated in 2016 if a Patek 5270R would be a better retirement gift to myself but my journey in watch collecting has taught me one valuable lesson - the more complex the watch is, the larger the chance that something will go wrong with it! Besides, I have always had a penchant for simple two or three handed watches so the Smith was really battling against the likes of Kari Voutilainen or Charles Frodsham rather than Patek.
I am attaching a photo that Caroline Smith had sent me last week to distinguish a 38mm and 40mm Series 1. I think the seconds dial counter on the 38mm version is a bit smaller and not as close to the centre of the watch.
Also, I think we love watches irrespective of the number of wrists we have just like a woman may have more than a dozen hand bags but would only wear one at any time. Watches really are the only accessory for men (yes I know I have seen some fascinating looking diamond stud earrings worn by Lewis Hamilton). But I do like to wear my watches rather than merely keep them in a box ( I am contradicting myself here as my piece unique Moritz Grossmann remains unworn after more than three years). and although the Smith will not be my daily wear, it will be worn a few times a week. So I will be quite happy with my five watch collection I believe. There will always be some great watches out there so a strong willpower and discipline will be required to keep the collection small.
