Cameras: I finally narrowed the choice between the Leica D Lux 7 and the Leica CL.

Jan 23, 2022,10:41 AM

I could finally test the Q 2, the D Lux 7 and the CL.

My needs? 70% macros. I bet you can guess why. wink

For that reason, the Q is disqualified for me.

There are only two cameras which work for my needs.

The CL:

The D Lux 7:

If funds were not an issue, I would go for the CL. The macro function is absolutely stunning.

Now, the problem is that you need to get several lenses, one for the macro, and a wide angle, to be able to shoot in all situations, which is not very practical, as you need to carry a lot of things with you when you travel.

The D Lux 7 is more practical as you can shoot what you want, with this camera. It is a huge improvement compared to the D Lux 6 which I own for 8 years, now, and which I need to replace.

The Macro is very convincing, too. But some will say that the D Lux 7 is to Leica what the Boxster is to the Porsche, and will mention that it is a rebadged Panasonic.Who cares?

Yes, if funds were not an issue, I would go for the CL and go for a wide angle and a macro lense.

But the D Lux 7 is 4 times less expensive and not a bad camera...

Food for thought... I will decide very soon.

Best,

Nicolas

But i’d go with the dlux for the requirements you mentioned. And it seems that you’re able to squeeze every beautiful pixel out of your current dlux judging from your watch pics. Skip the cl and pair your dlux with a leica M! At base iso, the M9 still pac...

Any M camera is not really suitable for macro pictures

and that's where Nico needs the camera for. GEO

You got the idea... ;)

I suggest considering Fuji...

For compact fixed-lens, compare D-lux 7 to Fuji X100V. For compact interchangeable lens (so you can use dedicated macro lens when you want), look at Fuji X-E4. On a budget, but looking for more? Compare CL to used Fuji GFX 50R (or 50S). No budget, compare...

I will soon reveal... ;)

What gear to choose is always a question...

 By: cshimokita : January 23rd, 2022-21:40
Photographer Thorsten Overgaard's video is one of the better commentaries... In a nutshell his approach is like this... 01) clearly define your requirements 02) make a short list selection 03) choose the camera that you like the most His reasoning is that...

+1!

Your recent Leica dilemma has caused to me relook at my gear... i have an A7C which i bought in lieu of a Q2. The red dot is really attractive and difficult to shake off the mind. I read before how the 4/3 sensor is very capable for watch photography due ...

Just curious- Did you shoot the Q after converting the lens to macro mode? It’s a lever and wheel on the edge of the lens.

I find the Q’s macro to be quite good, especially when using with the focus peeking feature.

above quote from the linked review... interesting read... thanks for the link. Casey .

I still don't understand what makes the Q2 the best Watch Guy Camera ever?

 By: Geo : January 25th, 2022-12:20
And I also do not understand, why I see so many guys at 'SIHH/Watches' & 'Wonder and Baselworld', with a Leica M. I know the Red dot is magic for some people and I also know that Leica makes fantastic camera's, but why for watch photography? GEO

Your 'trick' with the four peaces of paper

is a great idea and works excellent to get reflection green shots. The down side is that the watches tend to look satin finished instead of polished. When I saw your first shot of the steel Montre Ecole, I honestly thought that the watch was available in ...

It is actually astonishing that there are not more areas at the watch expo's

that are made ideal for shooting. I do not been studio qualiy, but more areas without spotlights. My most acceptable photos at the SIHH, I took in a storage room In the end, all those photos are taken to promote the brands.

I will test that asap.

Q2 Macro

The Q2 has a macro setting that works really well. You simply twist the barrel of the lens to the macro setting and shoot away.

Some CL Love

….

Panasonic

 By: EinPa : February 7th, 2022-14:16
Could be your answer. But for this photography I think the X100V May fill more needs and minimize kit

for Macro I would go Micro Four thirds Like a Panasonic with IBIS

 By: EinPa : March 7th, 2022-00:19
You can get a nice auto focus IBIS macro lens and then the body IBIS will work with the lens ibis and you'll get the stability you need. I would go Panasonic G9 with a Leica Macro lens
