Question About the Patek Philippe 3940
Sep 14, 2020,21:25 PM
During my enforced “Down Time” because of the pandemic, I have been reading-up and studying whatever I can find about vintage Patek Philippe. The early Perpetual Calendars and Perpetual Calendar Chronographs were made by Patek Philippe utilizing different components and ebauche movements from companies like Valjoux and Victorin Piguet and later from Nouvelle LaMania. Patek Philippe would modify these components as needed and finish them beautifully and incorporate them into the 1518, 1526, 2497, 2499 3970, Etc. I have also read that they used different watch case making specialist firms as well.
I have read no mention as to who made the ebauche or the Perpetual calendar mechanism for the 3940,.Does anybody know? Patek was using Nouvelle LeMania components for certain aspects of the 3970. Did they make everything in house for the 3940? Somebody here on the Forum has insight into this era of Patek Philippe manufacturing.
Many thanks!

the article omits some other information that i received from john reardon international head of watches at christies, in that despite the 7,000 production numbers there are some variants/ color metals that are indeed quite rare. the rose gold for example...

However nothing was mentioned about the 3940J and 3940R produced after the London exhibition using the 5140 dial layout.
