The XJ220 was officially priced at £290,000 in 1989 but Jaguar lacked the resources to develop the car as originally envisaged so the 6.2-litre V12 was replaced with a twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6 engine. Then all-wheel drive would be replaced in favour of a less costly rear-wheel drive. Even so with all the downgrades the finished product was projected to cost £470,000 in the end.
From over 1000 people initially expressing interest and putting down £50,000 deposit many cancelled their order. In the end only 271 cars were produced and the last car reportedly sold for £127,550 +VAT
