I wish there were more Vacheron Constantine watches like this one - the Prestige de France 1972

During a recent trip to Zürich I have had a lovely chat in the VC Boutique, and the chance to try out several of their watches I am interested in. Amongst others, the relatively rare and elusive 1972. It seems it is not as strong a seller as VC anticipated but that did not at all detract from the appeal for me (call me weird that way).
A non-round watch is always something of an oddball (in spite of the Reverso, Tank, etc.) but making it asymmetric, too, and curved is very rare. And giving it that VC touch of 'devil may care' attitude is the cherry on the cake.
The dial reflecting off the hands is another great touch and the complete lack of hour indices only fitting for a true dress watch. I could easily have done without the Swiss Made lettering at the bottom, too - but that is being picky
The curved case back makes it sit quite comfortably on the wrist, which is great, given the difficulty of attaching the asymmetric strap and making it fit appropriately. There is an odd feeling having it on the wrist - but it is fully psychological - as far as ergonomics go, the watch is spot on. Still, after 15 minutes one gets fully used to the idea
My attire was anything but appropriate for the occassion / or the watch. But I can see it working wonderfully with a proper shirt and suit. Thin enough to disappear under a cuff but magnetic enough to draw attention when coming out for a peek.
Now I definitely want one and I hope they will remain in the catalog long enough that I will be in a position to get it, too. And the ultimate in understated cool - and a correct decision from an aesthetic point of view, too - the caseback remains solid, in spite of the beautiful gold movement inside. Doesn't matter if you can see it, as long as you know it's there.
A great watch and - in my eyes - a great VC. And in a way a great secret
