Help me decide

Mar 12, 2017,23:15 PM

Dear friends, I am considering to treat myself to a dress watch and have tried several of them including PP 5196 After months of deliberation, I have finally narrowed it down to Lange Saxonia thin 37 mm and VC tradionalle small second. I have read numerous reviews and know I can't go wrong with either but would certainly appreciate views from those who owns either/both of them. Thanks

IMO Lange is more ascetic )) WBR Serge

Thanks

Thank you all for chiming in. VC is indeed my choice of the moment but just can\'t stop admiring the simplicity of Lange not to mention the gorgeous movement!

The Lange seems to have an edge in your heart ;-)

Regarding watches, think with your heart and not your brain Best wishes Alkiro

I'd go for the VC

 By: rnaden : March 13th, 2017-00:13
Warmer and is a little less cold. The movements are different but no less beautiful between the two, just very different characters.

You are right

 By: modest collector : March 13th, 2017-01:09
They are both beautiful moments. I think I am close to making a decision soon...

VC does look more intriguing...

For all the reasons mentioned by others, especially like the seconds hand - plain yet that touch of "complication."

+1 VC

 By: Saturninus : March 13th, 2017-01:28
I had a VC 82172 in rose gold, but traded it away. I missed it so badly, that I got another one, but this time in white gold. The VC is more striking. There are other watches that do simplicity as well as the Lange, but I don't really see anything else qu...

I agree the white gold is stunning

 By: modest collector : March 13th, 2017-01:32
Also love the platinum with grey dial. Though my main reason for the rose gold is to add some metal diversification to my current collection.

LANGE! [nt]

Have you considered the Saxonnia itself?

By: COUNT DE MONET : March 13th, 2017-02:08
There is a manual , RG Saxonia in 35 mm even. an automat in 37 mm too. However, the Saxonia thin in 37 mm has got a 72 h pr movement, which is quite something and I can see why you favour it over the VC.

I have a small wrist

 By: modest collector : March 13th, 2017-04:41
So 37m is the perfect size for me. The 72 days power reserve is certain a draw

VC in platinum or the boutique rose gold edition

 By: agyzace : March 13th, 2017-02:13
I have both and they are my favorite dress watches due to the dimensions and the movement which is hard to better from a technical perspective. Search for Kari Voutilainen\'s view on it. Lange is nice, but not as complete as the VC. All the best, Alex

My heart says both

 By: modest collector : March 13th, 2017-04:45
My brain says one of the two

On 4400

 By: modest collector : March 13th, 2017-07:55
I found the review on the movement - great insight. Thanks.

My pleasure modest collector.

 By: agyzace : March 13th, 2017-09:31
I think it\'s important to look globally what makes a good movement, beyond materials used or generic statements about brands. The 4400 is a stellar mechanical movement, in a true horological sense. All the very best, Alex

There is a little doubt in my mind....

 By: watercolors : March 13th, 2017-02:33
that the Saxonia is a better choice. If you want a matching VC I would choose Patrimony. Those two watches are two different leagues in my opinion. Happy choosing, at the end go with what your heart tells you Modest Collector. Best Regards Edward

Between these two, the VC.

But if an 1815 is in the running... =) J

Heard plenty of good things about 1815

 By: modest collector : March 13th, 2017-06:26
...it is in my dream list

I don't typically think of Langes as being elegant.

 By: TheMadDruid : March 13th, 2017-06:37
They can be stately; quirky; always handsome. But with the "Thin" Lange indeed has made an elegant dress watch. I would think this would never be worn except in formal settings. You cannot go wrong with it.

The VC...

Hi MC, Of course you have to pick one you actually want to gaze and muse upon first. For the me the Deco Diva wins it on looks by a mile, but aesthetics aside..... ..... flip it over and I think the VC demonstrates more finishes and particularly 3 perhaps...

+1 [nt]

I bought one...

 By: ant : March 13th, 2017-10:34
because it is sooooo incredibly beautiful and elegant. On the wrist it was fab, the coined back edge was a subtle design mastestroke....now for the Jeremy Clarkson bit,,,,but I didn't keep it becuse I found the winding crown too small for comfort. Yeah, I...

Have to agree

 By: Saturninus : March 13th, 2017-13:48
The one gripe I have on this otherwise perfect watch is that it is a PITA to wind. Maybe that\'s the price to be paid for having a 60hr power reserve on a single barrel in such a thin watch. I actually get a full 72 hours. Not bad. But yeah it hurts my fi...

Yes the 3rd day is there......

By: Velociphile - No longer in the building : March 13th, 2017-13:51
.... but at some cost in accuracy beyond the 60 hrs

As with so many things

 By: ant : March 13th, 2017-15:51
one cannot help but ask if anyone actually used it as it was intended....or just designed it. So many objects seem to be designed by people who either don't use them or think the visuals are more important than the practicals. )

On winding

 By: modest collector : March 13th, 2017-17:17
Funny enough, the sales person did casually suggest that I treat it with care and not to over wind it as he has seen a few cases of broken spring. That left me wonder a bit on the durability of the watch. But the Kari review gave me the final comfort.

I think it's....

By: Velociphile - No longer in the building : March 14th, 2017-00:12
because it's a single barrel with a long long spring. As you wind it the tension level goes from modest to quite high - perhaps moreso than a traditional manual wind with a shorter power reserve. I think one can more likely not wind it enough because of t...

Beautiful limited edition

 By: modest collector : March 13th, 2017-16:59
Thanks for sharing. It is indeed a very nice Lange. I admire Moser but have found the shape of the case a tad too round and too big for me.

VC ... but

 By: Blourenco : March 13th, 2017-14:15
I too have thought long and hard about his as am a dress watch kind of guy. If money was no object I would go for VC in platinum ... only critique is that the caliber is a bit old ... however, the Lange in while gold is great value. Either way, you should...

Agree. [nt]

 By: modest collector : March 13th, 2017-17:10

The lange

 By: watch-er : March 13th, 2017-15:15
is more softer and elegant to my taste. The VC is just too stark. I would tire of it quickly.

One more note

 By: watch-er : March 13th, 2017-15:17
the subsidiary seconds on the VC is too small for the dial ala the 5196 issues. This throws the whole look out of balance.

I concur

 By: modest collector : March 13th, 2017-17:06
While the size of the subdial is a bit small, it is very prominent visually, maybe a little bit too much. But the overall look is more than acceptable to me.

VC for sure! No question.

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : March 13th, 2017-17:56
The guilloche dial on the boutique edition is my favorite. Other ALS are nice, but the choice we have here is going to be a bore over time.

Agree that the boutique edition is pretty

 By: modest collector : March 13th, 2017-18:39
But price disparity is too wide to justify given there is no discount on the boutique edition

Done!

 By: modest collector : March 13th, 2017-23:58
I just pulled the trigger and collected my VC an hour ago. Thank you everyone for your valuable comments. This is my first VC and hope there will be a few more to come. Though this is not a new model, I do feel that VC is doing something interesting latel...
