TAG Heuer: A One Night Stand with the Cowboy Carrera

Jun 30, 2017,11:14 AM

I typically like to do more in-depth reviews of watches, but this one is different. While TAG Heuer’s latest iteration of the Calibre 16 Day-Date is mechanically identical to previous models, it marks a stunning evolution with a look and personality unique unto itself. I was fortunate last week to experience the new Carrera with a couple of days of wearing her “in the wild,” high in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.

My review is more of a photo essay, a journey through the mountains with a timepiece as befitting a Cowboy as an evening of cocktails in Manhattan. The new Carrera is pure unadulterated lust on a strap. This watch is a looker and she grew on me fast.

There’s no need to talk technology or innovation. It’s a proven design; an already formidable timepiece taken to the next level. Sexy and rugged, the latest Carrera is perfectly at home, even among the clouds at 14,000 feet above the Rockies as pictured here.

True to its roots, this Carrera retains its Drive Timer theme with a classic look that hits on all cylinders.

Part Cowboy, all Carrera, a spark of nostalgia exudes from every angle.

Beyond its rugged good looks, the new Carrera is a practical chronograph with a day-date function.

A rustic appearance is enhanced with an earthy tan Super Luminova applied to the hands and numerals as well as the Tachymetre scale on its the ceramic clad bezel.

Though it presents the same clean, sexy profile of previous Carreras, this model screams rugged with a micro-blasted Grade-2 titanium case coated in titanium carbide.

Inside beats TAG Heuer’s venerable Calibre 16 automatic chronograph movement at 28,000 vibrations per hour. Based on the classic ETA 7750, it has a power reserve of 42 hours

Surprisingly, at 43mm, one of the most noticeable features of this piece is how comfortably it wears.

This Carrera’s lightweight titanium case and low profile pay dividends in terms of comfort.

The chassis is secured with a supple, distressed calfskin strap that conforms gently to the wrist.

With a couple of days of wrist time, I never got tired of this piece! (You knew that was coming! ; )

I realize this post is a LOT of photos of the same watch, but it’s a unique piece with such extraordinary character, that my trip was continually interrupted as I removed the Carrera for yet another photo.

My goal with this post was to show the new Carrera in a multitude of environments in the hope that you will appreciate its style and versatility just as I experienced it.

This is a serious “daily driver,” robust and dependable, whether you ride the range or drive a Range Rover.

It’s rustic, its rugged and ready for the real world. This “Cowboy Carrera” is a great addition to the TAG Heuer lineup. Priced below $5,000 USD, it challenges all other 7750 based contenders.

You are a talented photograph and the watch is off course very nice. I think that this timepiece is not for everybody. For me the owner should have a rustic(as you said) and adventurous temperament. Best

Thank you for the compliments.

I didn't want to "over do" the rustic theme but the environment made it so easy. Truth is, this piece has such personality that it adapts to many settings. It can easily carry an urban theme or in the right setting can even be kinda chic. At first I had m...

Totally agree.
