INSTRUMENTS OF TIME

Junghans makes history: As an age of industrialization and revolutions, the nineteenth century produced pioneering inventions such as the steam locomotive or the telephone. The roots of the “Erhard Junghans” company and their trailblazing innovations also date back to the year 1861. In the United States, Erhard Junghans had acquired some knowledge about modern production and distribution methods when he and his partner launched their own watch factory, “Junghans & Zeller”, in the town of Schramberg in the Black Forest. Only two years later, they manufactured more than 300 watches per week. Before long, their products were known and appreciated far beyond the borders of Germany. Over the centuries, the name Junghans would live on and become synonymous with highest quality and precision.

More than 145 years after the company was founded, … Schramberg is still the birthplace for extremely precise timepieces and technological innovations – and once again for watches of the “Erhard Junghans” brand. In several years of development, Junghans engineers have created two completely autonomous movements that form the foundation for the new watch models by “Erhard Junghans”, living up to the high quality standards of a product “made in Germany” in a very special way.

The bi-directionally winding rotor inside the J 830 automatic movement features a power reserve of more than 50 hours, with a balance wheel frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. The display shows hours, minutes, and seconds, complemented by a date at the 3-o’clock position.

The traditional design of the wheel bridge adapts the look of its historical predecessors to a new and contemporary interpretation. The J 890 automatic chronograph movement also achieves a 50-hour power reserve with its bi-directionally winding rotor, but it not only displays hours and minutes, seconds and the date. The power reserve display, the chronoscope feature with stopwatch, and the 30-minute and 12-hour timers complete the overall impression of a movement that redefines mechanical precision and attention to detail.

The Special Collection

The CREATOR 1861 (from Latin creator: “founder”) line is the first to incorporate the Junghans automatic movements. In addition to the successful CREATOR “Automatic”, CREATOR “Retrograd” and CREATOR “Chronoscope” styles, there will be another highlight at the Basel watch fair (April 2007): the CREATOR “Gangreserve” (movement J 830.5). What all models in this line have in common is the distinctive three-dimensional dial, which has never before been realized in this particular form and is guaranteed to make a Grand Entrance.

Friends of an elegant and traditional dial design will welcome the debut of the Tempus 1861 (from Latin tempus: “time”) line, to be launched at the Basel watch fair as well. With its interplay of an enamel-colored dial and filigreed Roman numerals, it recreates the charm of vintage pocket watches. In combination with the hand-made movements J 830, J 830.5, and J 890, the TEMPUS “Automatic”, TEMPUS “Gangreserve”, and TEMPUS “Chronoscope” models bridge the gap between classic luxurious design and unparalleled functionality.

The intersection between internal function and external aesthetics has a new name –  Erhard Junghans –  made in Germany, since 1861.
