From Max Busser and Friends: A First Look at the Movement of HM 2!

Apr 05, 2007,13:12 PM

Horological Machine Number 2, that is.

Max Busser, as you all know, is the dynamic former leader of Harry Winston Rare Timepieces, who presided over some of the most innovative and remarkable watches yet seen.

Through a unique collaborative creative and business model, Max formed "Maximillian Busser and Friends," a small workshop in which creative interaction between some of the best and brightest minds in both watchmaking and industrial design would work to create, not only new watches, but recreate the very concept of a watch as a design object.

The watch as a form of sculpture, as the embodiment of a philosphy of time, and as a vehicle for a new form of intellectual and temporal expressionism, was incarnated for the first time in the remarkable Horological Machine No. 1.

The stated goal of Maximillian Busser and Friends seemed both laudable, and impossible: to create, once a year, a totally new and visionary wristwatch that would show how the collaborative creative process can redefine horology both as an engineering discipline and as a design effort.

It would appear, however, that once again, in a continuation of the high wire acts that have punctuated his career, that Maximillian Busser and his friends have done it again.  We are very pleased and privileged to be able to share with our community this first image of the Heart of the Machine- the movement of Horological Machine No. 2.

Characteristically for Maximilian Busser and Friends, this horological engine raises more questions than it answers- what complication could it possible support?  What possible purpose could the raised disks and circular appendages, purposeful and elegant as the legs of a UFO poised for landing, represent?

Darned if I know smile but I bet we'll have a lot of fun guessing until we see the whole watch.

Thanks to Maximillian Busser and Friends, for this fascinating glimpse into the future!

Hi, That's no common watch. One week before knowing what's going on? Dje

To imprison this little beauty in a wristwatch case would be a serious injustice, as it obviously wants to fly and be free. Forcing it to tell the time (assuming that it does or can do so) is just not right.

LOL, you know, I have to say. . .

. . .this site, obviously, is full of people who look at watches. People who look at watches a LOT. Some of them, like you, deal with watches for a living. And while I kinda sorta have some kind of vague general sense of what's going on with this one- tha...
