PP introduces the ref. 5960P Chronograph Annual Calendar, a completely new inhouse calibre

Jan 26, 2006,06:18 AM - (view entire thread)

The long awaited moment has arrived - the much speculated about new in-house chronograph calibre was announced last night at Patek Philippe's Plans-Les-Outes head quarters by Mr. Philippe Stern. Many, many people will be very, very surprised...

The reference 5960P houses the new calibre CH 28-520 IRM QA 24H, an inhouse design that boasts an automatic column wheel chronograph.

But wait, that's not all...

It also has an annual calendar with calendar displays in circumferential inline windows. This type of calendar display is relatively rare and highly sought after by collectors.

But wait, that's not all...

Surprisingly, the chronograph is not only a classic column wheel design, but also utilizes a vertical clutch. This type of design not only reduces backlash induced hand jitter - the notorious "second hand jump" upon chronograph engagement - but also allows for the constant running of the chronograph without the usual reduction of amplitude and stability of timekeeping associated with non-vertical clutch designs.

But wait, that's not all...

The movement is designed to allow for a very unusual dial layout for a chronograph, which is at once apparently simple and traditional, yet very radical upon closer examination.

All of this housed in a classic platinum case, with the diamond set between the lower lugs, as has become a tradition of sorts for platinum cased watches from Patek in recent years.

I examined the chronograph seconds hand activation and reactivation very closely; the dreaded "second hand jump" is indeed greatly reduced. The pushers are still a little "hard" on the sample I tried, compared to classic column wheel chronographs I am so much in love with, from the 1940's and 1950's. I will be curious to see how final production samples feel in this regard.

How does it look in person? I'll reserve comments on this until Suitbert and I are able to do a more comprehensive write up; on that note, I leave you with this...

Call your local Patek Philippe authorized dealer or agent for more information regarding availability date and pricing. I am sure, everything else aside, the waiting list will be long for this one, the first new inhouse chronograph movement in many a decade. The additional, unique features will only add to the lustre and desirability of this new model.

Cheers,

TM
