A non Rolex guy's guide to his first Rolex

Sep 19, 2017,08:54 AM

This is a help needed thread as there are so many nuances

Currently own: panerai 233 dot /368/190 and IWC 500107 and 3536-01

Selling 233; don't mind buying pre owned

Choices ... I know the obvious differences; but I don't the nuances in wearability in bracelets, top heavy? Balanced? Relative availability?

SD43 (+red, 70hr Reserve, - cyclops for SD)
SD4000 (+ no cyclops)
Ceramic sub no date (+ less popular, no cyclops 😀)?
Batman (+GMT more unique then all black? Less versatile?)
All black GMT (classic)
White dial explorer 11 (white dial + orange)

Would love new Pepsi ceramic; but out of my range
And Jocke's modified 1665 😀

To me Rolex wears a couple mm bigger and lots ok for me as I like watches 42-45mm. I have a 6.76-7" wrist
Assume I will only own 1 Rolex at a time

Thoughts? Looking for the "collector's Rolex" if there is such a thing... prolly not if it has a ceramic bezel?

Have only tried on the ceramic non date and really like it a couple years ago. I thought I was going to think it was too small, but it had a lost of wrist presence. Thanks the SD4000 is the only one on my list that would have to be pre-owned?

Thanks George will do! [nt]

The best advice I can give is to try the watches on and see which one speaks to you.

All your choices are good. I am vintage guy so I always go old school. There are some that still qualify as vintage but have sapphire crystal like the Rolex 16760. Tropical version on the right. On the left is a 5513 meters first the best way to start a j...

Best advice is always to try on...

Will have to see. Won't know if I will have access to try on the SD4000 and 43; bit should be able to try the others
