50 is coming soon! Questions, questions, questions...

Aug 06, 2016,03:37 AM

Dear watch friends,

mid of October I'm going to reach - hopefully just - the first half of my life. And I'm looking forward to make a nice present to myself. A watch. What else? smile

Since I'm a heavy user of all my watches I don't buy just for the vault. Neither I have a special "topic collection", just - except 2 Panerais - 1 IMHO representative example of some brands I appreciate. Protagonists that warm my heart and I really love (from PP, Rolex and Moser to PAM, JLC and GP up to Zenith, Oris and more). Investment thoughts are not my cup of tea.

A watch has to "sing" to me, has to represent highest quality, has to fit to me physically as well as to my personality and shall become a part of my life.

Not long ago I had a "phase" where I wanted to get rid of all my "luxury ballast". I thought about reducing my collection to max. 3 watches that would cover all parts of my life. My AD, who became a good friend of me over the years, prevented the worst smile

Now I'm driven by a strong longing again...

The new watch should be a true all-rounder, versatile, sporty, elegant, and it should also pardon a spontaneous jump into to the water.

So - after a time of critical reflection - I have ended up with a Rolex DD 40 WG (more elegant, very interesting new technical features) or a Rolex Submariner Blue TT (more sporty, an icon).

I know you cannot really compare them. And there are many other beauties from different brands out there. But that's my current emotional situation. So far. smile

At the moment I own only one piece from Rolex: a DD 36 WG with a silver dial. It's a perfect and versatile watch I like a lot. The smaller diameter is not really a problem for my wrist. The watch fits and wears very well. Though sometimes I can't help feeling a strong longing for some millimeters more...

So - here I am.

My current DD 36:

The Sub Blue TT:

And my short listed versions of the DD 40. There are three dials I prefer: blue, olive green (I had no chance to see it on my wrist so far but like it very much on the wrist of Radone, whom I recommended this colour after I have seen it in a shopping window) or silver (again).

Blue:

Olive green:

(picture from the Rolex Website)

Silver:

Now I'm interested in your help and would appreciate your thoughts and advises very much.

1. Would you keep the DD36 and in addition go for the Sub Blue TT? Or should I upgrade from my DD36 to the DD40 WG (my AD has offered this option to me). The costs are rough the same. My "watch funds" are limited at the moment. So: going for both models is not an option for me.

2. If I go for the DD40 WG which dial version would you recommend to me? In my current collection most of the watches have black, grey and white dials. No blue, no green and one silver (my DD 36).

What do you think?

Thanks a lot in advance for your kind help!

Kind regards, Thomas

DD

I absolutely love the Rolex DD on the first picture. And i would add a black or dark blue other watch with it, for contrast. If i were you, i would add the Rolex Submariner no-date with the black dial.

Thanks a lot!

 By: MTR : August 6th, 2016-06:31
That means you wouldn\'t sell the DD 36? I don\'t want to add another watch with a black dial to my collection. So the Sub no-date is a marvelous watch but this time not an option for me. Therefore I ended up with the Sub Blue TT. My first concern was tha...

I like the day date with blue dial

 By: esddmd : August 6th, 2016-04:41
That would be my choice since it appears you already have a collection of watches with white and black dials.

Thank you, esddmd!

 By: MTR : August 6th, 2016-06:36
That was also my first thought. And on the wrist it looks stunning. Best, Thomas

I'm biased

 By: Arie - Mr Orange : August 6th, 2016-05:12
But I would upgrade to the Day-Date 40. Why? Because its the sharpest DD out there and it has got the perfect (mens) size. And I\'d choose the olive green dial. It looks fresh. I might even put that dial in my Day-Date some day! Have fun deciding! ...

The greatest pleasure lies in the anticipation! :-)

 By: MTR : August 6th, 2016-06:43
I have to make my decision until end of August to get my "present" in time. Thanks a lot for your advice, Arie! I like your Platin version with the smooth bezel very much. Have you ever considered the ice blue dial with the Roman numerals? Best, Thomas

As a matter of fact

 By: Arie - Mr Orange : August 6th, 2016-08:46
I\'ve ordered that dial

Gooooood!!!

 By: MTR : August 6th, 2016-10:06

You can't go wrong with one of these 2 watches.

 By: Chrisparet : August 6th, 2016-05:47
Just try and listen to your heart! Best. Christian

My heart jumps at the moment...

 By: MTR : August 6th, 2016-06:44
So it\'s hard to listen... Best, Thomas

But

 By: MTR : August 7th, 2016-14:02
I start to see clearer now.

I would keep your DD 36 and ad the Blue two Tone Sub.

 By: amanico : August 6th, 2016-06:21
you will have a very nice watch, for the dress moments, and a cool, just a cool and not too often seen watch. My opinion, Best, Nicolas

Hmmmmm....

 By: MTR : August 6th, 2016-06:57
Yes, I have to think about that. Thank you for your good advice, Nicolas! Why in your opinion the Blue TT Sub is not seen so often? I just recognize it from time to time in some shopping windows. Perhaps not versatile enough? Or primary a summer watch tha...

I would go all the way with 18k sub 116618

 By: Fjan : August 6th, 2016-09:29
If you want the sub to look even sportier.. Try rubber b! Good luck n happy shopping! .. HAGWE.. Jen ...

A really unique piece, Jen!

 By: MTR : August 6th, 2016-10:28
Congrats. Looks very nice on your wrist! I have to confess I favour white metal for my wrist. HAGWE too Thomas

So it's quite Interesting that...

 By: MTR : August 9th, 2016-15:15
....Rolex starts its new Datejust 41 series in TT (steel & YG). Best, Thomas

Do you know the idea behind this?

 By: MTR : August 10th, 2016-11:09
Simply design and aesthetic reasons? Or perhaps to offer a cheaper access for customers who desire a gold watch but cannot afford a full gold version? Best, Thomas

No wrong choices here!

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : August 6th, 2016-11:57
If you can swing it, trade the silver dd36 for a dd40. You can do the awesome quadrant silver dial with Roman's. Now, get the TT blue sub and you have the lovely blue dial. That makes a great 2 watches.

2 great watches...

 By: MTR : August 7th, 2016-00:27
Your are so right, Spangles. I\'m not 100% sure about the quadrant pattern. The longer I look at it the feeling is growing that I would prefer a reduced (plain) version. Thanks

The DD40 may feel like a minimal change compared to your near perfect (for me) DD36 ...

 By: syf : August 6th, 2016-22:31
And since this is to mark a milestone you may want something different too, which the Sub definately offers.

Wise thoughts...

 By: MTR : August 7th, 2016-03:04
The 118209 has been a loyal and very reliable companion to me for more than a decade. I share many memories with this watch. Perhaps I should consider if - in order to "mark a milestone" (as you wrote) - I really want to dispose of all that... The DD36 (s...

only 36mm

 By: alexxelor : August 7th, 2016-02:48
day date is only 36 mm

Interesting...

 By: MTR : August 7th, 2016-03:16
Why do you think and feel like that? Many Rolex fans speak of the DD40 as the new DD protagonist and "new classic". And also many enthusiasts feel like you... Best, Thomas

36vs40

 By: alexxelor : August 7th, 2016-03:54
because the 40 mm is fashion, while the 36mm gives me that unique feeling, tradition and history of the iconographic rolex brand

Ok...

 By: MTR : August 7th, 2016-08:21
... that\'s what I would call a clear statement! All the best, Thomas

Do whatever

 By: watch-er : August 7th, 2016-06:37
you can without selling anything you have. I think that is most critical as it prevents huge losses from the watch merry go round so many of us get caught on. A big collection makes you much more discerning and discriminating in adding a piece. Just my tw...

That's a wise advice!!

 By: MTR : August 7th, 2016-09:32
Thank you! Have you ridden on this merry-go-round too? I must confess I have ... some years ago... I completely agree with you if a collector appreciates and enjoys every single piece of his/her watch collection. Because IMHO it\'s also a loss to store wa...

Such an easy answer for me

 By: radone : August 8th, 2016-02:59
Since you contributed heavily to my decision, I find it normal that I try to impact your choice with my "hands-on" impressions. Believe me, Thomas, if you buy the green dial, you will hardly put on another bracelet watch. Every day, when I have to choose ...

Dear Radone! Oh no!! I must confess...

 By: MTR : August 8th, 2016-11:08
... I have been expecting your seductive response. Fearfully! Your post together with the wristshot of your beautiful DD 40 are shaking my laboriously built up theoretical framework... :-/ Yes, your DD is really stunning!! But - rationality switched on - ...

Unless your wrist is small....

 By: Arie - Mr Orange : August 8th, 2016-13:02
You will be sold when strapping the Day-Date 40 on. At least I think so. It\'s hard to explain but once you see the sharpness of the case.... Although I can understand the sentiment regarding the old version. But sometimes change is good. Curious to find ...

Totally agree! [nt]

 By: radone : August 8th, 2016-21:57

Dear Radone, I definitely

I know, I know....

Dear Radone, how is your DD doing?

 By: MTR : August 30th, 2016-10:56
Is it still your favorite watch which usurps all your wrist time? Best, Thomas

By far, Thomas.

 By: radone : August 30th, 2016-13:26
After owning several Pateks (5070G, 5980/1A, 5711/1A, 5109J), ALS, VC, Roger Dubuis, IWC, Daniel Roth, Harry Winston and other haute horologerie brands, I am somehow ashamed to admit in front of this knowleadgeable community that this DD is my ever favour...

Your confession...

 By: MTR : August 30th, 2016-16:20
I appreciate your confession very much! Obviously you have made your perfect personal decision. And I like your - yes: modest - attitude. I\'m sure that you are more delighted in wearing your favorite watch than some hunter-gatherers with perhaps a larger...

I would trade your DD

 By: andrevmsilva : August 8th, 2016-11:57
For the new DD 40th with the olive green dial! But thats just me, because im not a fan of TT watches in general

I thought like you.

 By: MTR : August 9th, 2016-14:15
I\'m definitely not a fan of YG. And I have never owned a TT watch. But I find this combination of blue, silver and yellow quite fresh and appropriate. Best, Thomas ...

Late to the party [nt]

 By: Miranda : August 10th, 2016-03:04
But the olive green or Why not something from 1966? Maybe a 1019 Milgauss for example Pic credit Christies ...

Welcome to the party, Imran!

 By: MTR : August 10th, 2016-11:25
Beautiful Milgauss! But for this time it seems too "similar" to my DD 36: Oyster bracelet, smooth bezel and similar size (37mm)? Why didn\'t you show me your Batman? I\'m waiting for a seductive wristshot Best, Thomas

Help!

 By: MTR : August 10th, 2016-12:04
Gorgeous watch! You make my decision not easier.... I have to confess I have also tried this watch some weeks ago. What\'s your wearing experience? How much wrist time does it get? Best, Thomas ...

Now you have made me curious... :-)

 By: MTR : August 11th, 2016-15:21
What does get the most wrist time from your collection? Best, Thomas

If it was up to me....hmm..well

 By: Rogi : August 10th, 2016-15:03
I think the best option would be to either save up for or trade for the DD 40 WG with olive green dial. It just does something to my senses that would make me trade (I never trade :o) and that dial looks amazing in person. Again see the piece in person as...

Very nice Diver Blue, Rogi!

 By: MTR : August 11th, 2016-16:14
And thank you for your thoughts. That means you also feel comfortable with the blue-gold-steel-combination? Have you ever considered the Sub Blue TT? And if yes - what were the reasons to choose the Cartier instead? Best, Thomas

Thank you :) and

It was originally a dual, between three, a bit of a long story. 1. Tag Heuer Grey Phantom - Fell apart as I never have a special order fufilled and I have to order this one, I've ordered 6 Omegas via special orders (at different times in my collecting at ...

 By: Rogi : August 11th, 2016-18:49
From the specs they are both similar but the reason I went with the Cartier (apart from the love) is that it incorporated a lot of elements that is well known for Cartier lovers, the Roman numeral (looks amazing in lume) , blue cabochon stone and the firs...

be a never ending search. Have you narrowed down some options?

Yes, dear Rogi :-)

 By: MTR : August 12th, 2016-15:32
I have come to this (very personal) ranking so far: 1. DD 40 with Roman numerals: the olive (I just have to see it on my wrist), the blue (fantastic!) or the silver dial (I\'m not sure about the quadrant pattern). BUT will I be able to give up my old love...

Excellent options but

 By: Rogi : August 12th, 2016-16:10
I think you'll go with either 1. Olive dial or 3. The white gold Sub , the Smurf was intoxicating when I saw it at my AD , did you consider a Skydweller by chance? let us know when you pick it up, mandataory wrist shot, one more small thing, Would you hav...

Hi Igor, what will I go for?

 By: MTR : August 13th, 2016-10:05
Perhaps you know already more than I do? I must confess I find the blue dial of the DD40 also very intriguing.... Yes, I have also tried the Sky Dweller. I\'m not 100% sure about the dial. Although it fits very comfortably. In any case it should be with t...

Update: partial decision

 By: MTR : August 20th, 2016-16:22
Ok. It will be a DD 40 WG. But which dial shall I choose? On my whishlist there are still three dials (all with Roman numerals): 1. The olive dial: also the expression of an anniversary (like mine ). Very intriguing and cool. And it looks so fabulous on t...

Hi Thomas

 By: mywrongwrist : August 21st, 2016-10:42
I think you made the right choice I would have no doubt and go for the green one, newer, fresh, without any kind of fear, and since your AD was so kind to provide you with one just wait and see how it feels on your wrist The other options seem too common,...

Thanks a lot for your helpful comment, Luca!

 By: MTR : August 22nd, 2016-22:49
My AD will receive the olive green one in about 4-6 weeks. Then I - hopefully - will be able to make my decision. I think the "big" decision was the "watch decision". A dial can be changed easily at a later time. Of course I will keep you posted - hoping ...

Update

 By: MTR : October 23rd, 2016-06:46
Birthday celebrated. Rolex still missing. There went something wrong with the ordering process. And a non-English weekday display seems to be a very uncommon choice. So I have to wait some further weeks. Sigh... I will keep you informed! Best, Thomas

Finally on my wrist!

 By: MTR : October 26th, 2016-09:44
A cordial thanks to all of you who supported my decision making process with your valuable and sage advices! I will come back with hopefully better photos and a new thread. Best, Thomas ...
