The Viet Nam statue depicted here is only a small part of the whole Memorial.

And this statue was actually added to the design as a compromise and peace offering to Veterans who wanted a traditional representation. The original design which exists and is near this statue, is a black wall with the names of every U.S. soldier who die... 

The 'wall' is of course well known and impressive...

but I understand the interest in having a 'traditional' representation as well... I guess I am thinking of the individuals who returned... and it's very well done if I can judge by the photo. The local community were my dad lived did a wall of 'all' local... 

Where I live there is a small memorial for local men who died.

It is closer in spirit to the wall, which surprised me when it was unveiled; the wall being so controversial and the area where I live being so extremely Conservative. I have a feeling "cost" was a key factor.
